Hi guys,

Was wondering what the components are for a full custom build.

What I know of so far:

Barrel
Action
Bolt
Recoil lug
Trigger
Stock

I'd imagine I'm missing pieces, what are they ?

Thanks in advance!

C

If you use a custom action, some (like Surgeon) have the lug and rail as integral parts.

Actions will typically come with a bolt.

Some will want a specific bolt knob put on

Various options for setting up your stock, flush cups, adjustable LOP, adjustable buttplate, adjustable cheekrest, etc.

If this is your first time, then keep it simple until you figure out what you really need/like, that way you can spend more on ammo and shoot more.

Having more "stuff" bolted on is not necessarily better (go to a public range and watch some of the AR, AK, and Lord knows whatall frankenbuilds in action).

If youre really new, I wouldn't get caught up in a custom build until you know what you want/need. I am not trying to belittle you as I don't know your experience, just saying.

I went through a few different factory Remington models and a savage I currently own. when I do my custom build in the near future, I know which parts of each model I liked as well as different stock options and optics.

if you decide to do a custom build , you better get ready cause you will never own another production gun. it gets exspensive

Sorry I took so long to respond... ctso030 - I know exactly what you mean. I have a few high end 1911's and they ruined me for any production 1911's, handguns in general for that matter lol... broylz - I've shot on and off over the years but haven't owned my own bolt gun yet. Just a bunch of carbines and handguns of all shapes and sizes.... I'm fairly profficient with a bolt gun also, I shoot a relatives 700 based rifle out to 200 every so often with sub MOA groupings without an issue... I can do MOA or slightly above at 200 with my Colt LE6940 really... So my experience may not be mainly in this arena but I'm no stranger to shooting. One of my fears is I'll get a base SPS or something of the sort and will feel where it can be improved fairly quickly. Based on my venture into the custom 1911 world, or any hobby for that matter, great pieces put together will always perform extremely well. Then the fun is trying to catch up to it's capabilities.
jashmore1234 - I don't have a reloading setup yet but I plan on putting one together while the rifle is being put together also so it's ready to " rock n roll " once the rifle is.

Do you guys have a list of smith's you would recommend for putting the rifle together from it's components ? Also what are your thoughts on the JAE stocks ?

Component list I'm leaning towards -

Surgeon Action + Bottom metal + Bolt handle ( my understanding is the recoil lug comes with action, as well as the rail )
Krieger Barrel - 20"
Jewell Trigger
JAE Stock - haven't decided on all the parts yet

Glass will come last but I still have no idea who to send it to. I'm familiar with many talented smith's in the 1911 world but not in this one. Any names would be greatly appreciated.

I understand the desire for a custom build. Im just not there fully yet. You may be suprised to see what a decent remington 700 can do when set up properly, mostly bedding the base if needed, lapping the rings, etc. I stupidly sold my aac-sd model and ended up with a nice savage in another trade deal. It too is a good shooter, just not exactly what I want.

look up walker custom guns for your build. Hes a smaller shop but comes very highly recommended by a few I trust.

Your parts list looks good. You may have a bit of a hard time trying to come up with a Surgeon action. I haven't seen any instock and the wait will be a long one. Take a look at actions from Defiance Machine and Bighorn. The last Defiance action I ordered took about 8 weeks.

As far as gunsmiths to build:
Mark Gordon at Short Action Custom
Jared Joplin and American Precision Arms
Mike Bush at BlackOps
Moon at Crescent Customs
GAP
Chad Dixon at Long Rifles

Those are not listed in any order and there are many others that will build you a fantastic rifle.

You might want to specify what the gun will be used for. If you're only shooting at the range or for fun....there's no need to waste money on a dbm setup...and you could also save money by buying a single shot action.

Also....caliber choice should be considered when deciding barrel length...as well as how far you'll be shooting. 20" is a short barrel and you might be better served with a longer barrel if you plan to shoot at distance

GSRswapandslow 95% range shooting really... I don't ever get to hunt and if I did go I prob wouldn't take this sort of build on a hunt but I'll leave the 5% open as anything is possible. I figured the DBM would be useful for the mags, I see what you mean about the single action. I haven't looked at single shot action's as of yet, is the price difference significant ? Shot distances would be between 100 and 500 90% of the time... the majority of that between 3 and 500. Once in a blue moon I'd get to visit a relative that has an 850 yd range nearby but that would be the occasional treat. I'm currently looking at 308 Win as a caliber.
PatrickChewing Thanks for the list! I'll definitely look at them closely as well as Defiance Machine and Bighorn. I did a cursory search and they seem to have good reviews, I'm also seeing what you mean about the surgeon actions not being easy to find, so far no luck finding one available.

About the actions... I'm noticing most of the actions that get really good reviews are in the 1K + area... Are there good custom actions in the 500-1K range also ? Figured can't hurt to take a look at those as well while shopping around.

Chris,

Check out North West Action Works. They offer trued Remington actions starting around 600 bucks.

As far as cheaper custom actions I believe you can get a Stiller in the 900-950 range.

Cool, thanks again Patrick... still getting a feel for the landscape price wise in this area.

Contact RW Snyder Gunsmithing and start out with budget precision build. Drop the barreled action into a Manners mini-chassis and rock and roll. That's what I would've done if I could start over from scratch:

- RWS Rem 700 Barreled action with 26" barrel, muzzle brake and tactical bolt knob
- Chambered in 6.5 CM
- Manners mini-chassis
- Harris or atlas bipod

you could get a Savage varmint single shot or the competition single shot action for like $550 from NSS and then just order a CBI prefit barrel and tools from him. You'll have at, maybe less, than $1000 in all of it...and you'll have a MUCH more accurate barreled action, for less money than going the remington route... I really regret not going savage form the get go on my last gun, but it does ok.

why i suggest the savage route:

1. action has floating bolt face and is a solid bottom action with a smaller ejection port....sucker is pretty stiff
2. the CBI match pre-fits have proven to be very accurate barrels for a great price. You prob wouldn't win a benchrest match with them..but they win quite a few tacticool and steel matches.
3. the action, for the price, comes with a trigger, trigger guard, action screws, and the barrel nut already...the trigger can tune down to like 6oz...
4. you get the tools when you get the barrel and action....so whenever you decide you want to go to a different caliber...you're good to go.
5. with the barrel nut, you can switch barrels in minutes.
6. floating bolt faces can be swapped out so you aren't limited to JUST your boltface... you can do a 222/223 bolt face...then swap out to a br/creedmore/etc bolt face

there's plenty of stocks out there...joel russo, shehane, mcmillian, manners....
