Gunsmithing How would you chamber a .22 rimfire

Very recently I have taken an interest in .22 rimfire. I have been shooting a factory rifle that I feel shoots rather well. However, as usual, I'm never satisfied until I make my own or fail trying. While I might know a little (just enough to no kill myself) about chambering a Remington 700, I admit that I don't know shit about chambering one of these little guys. I don't even know what the tools look like. I have searched here and else where, and am yet to find a detailed source of info that can even give me an idea as to how to do it. I'm thinking a Stiller X25 action, and I don't even know who makes a great barrel for this application. Can't be terribly difficult, but I would rather not learn the way I did with the 700. Someone out there knows how, and I just have to find out who. I don't expect the pros to come forward, as that is their bread and butter. I have been on this site everyday looking in the gunsmithing section since 2009, and have never seen anything on this subject. Why? Isn't this the best forum in the world, with the best gunsmiths around both pro and hobby builders? I hate to think I don't have a chance at this. Thanks in advanced for any help.

was thinking the same awhile back. the bolt / firing mechanism may be the deciding factor.

PTG put out a 40X bolt a while back too, don't know if it'll actually work in a 700 receiver withoug modifying stuff.

probably by the time you put in the work, just building a 40X or the using the x25 may be the ticket.

Want a barrel to practice on. I have a junk one or two you could cut on. Send a PM if you need some stuff to mess with. Biggest pain (for me) is cutting the ejector slot.

Rimfire is a small slice of the shooting world, check Rimfirecentral.com . You might run across someone that's been there - done that.

Just a thought!

Rem 40x is a good wayto go. A 22rf is no different than a center fire. I have one that I built up to duplicate my palma rifle 100%. Same stock, same action (almost), same barrel (kreiger), same barrel contour and weight, same sights. I had the same guy build it for me that built my palma rifle. The only difference was the reamer. If you order a barrel make sure you order 22 rf. The bore diameter and twist rate are different.

By 40x I mean a 40x rim fire

Thanks a lot guys. Some of this has got me looking in the right direction. I saw C Dixons thread on the X 40 22 build, but he didn't share the details of the chambering operation. I don't really blame him. Besides, the tools he uses are way out there for me. Please don't stop now. Keep it coming, because the more we know, the better the end result. Again, thanks.

Karl Kenyon was/is God of all tings rimfire. I once paid almost a thousand dollars for one of his triggers. -made with a hacksaw and a file from a grain truck leaf spring. Its beautiful! It sits in a box under my coffee table next to other vintage trinkits.

He's my hero w/several olympic gold medals under his belt.

Point is nothing he ever did was w/exotic tooling.

Leave NO stone unturned when it omes to the mighty rimfire. They are fussy buggers.

I'm starting to see your point on being fussy. Hope I can talk myself out of this venture, but I'm loosing at the moment. Wish I could just leave things alone, and enjoy them as is for once. I know a lot can be done with simple tools, it's that you have the coolest shit I've ever seen for making/working on guns, not to mention the most important part, your experience. Maybe I'll spend a little more time looking and learning before I get too involved in trying to work on them for now. Thanks.

Ozzie,

Give me a call if you like. I'll throw a tibit or two for you to consider. The rifle I built for Matt Emmons was done with a 1947 J head Bridgeport and a Jet lathe that should have been parked at the bottom of a lake for fish habitat years before I ever got a hold of it.

I'm sure your equipment resources are better than what I had back then.

Just keep this in mind:

The 22LR is NOT a high performance cartridge. It travels roughly 1/3rd the speed of anything "cool" that has a primer in the middle of the case head. That means its spending almost 3x times longer in the barrel.

The same kind of big engineering terms (words like frequency, harmonic, amplitude, etc. . .) still apply. It's just that now they have more time to screw with stuff. I don't profess to know anything about them. I just know that they are important and measures need to be taken so that whatever it is they do is consistent from one trigger pull to the next.

You'll never mitigate them all, so don't waste your time fretting over it.

Gimme a shout on Saturday if you like. I'll have a moment or two to chat.

C.

Another plug for Benchmark barrels....especially for rimfire.

Give them a call and ask them about chambering too. They do quite a bit of it and are great guys to converse with. Although I'm sure Chad will get you right where you need to be.

Bill Calfee used to post on here. I'm sure he knows as much as anyone about rimfires. He's written some pretty good articles on his experience.

Stiller is a great action builder. I have a Lonestar and had my factory 40x barrel fit to it. I would got ahead with the Stiller if i was you. Then look for a factory 40x barrel cheap. You can experiment with it and still end up with a great shooter. Trust me that it can be made into a great shooter. BTW i did my whole build for under 1000$.
