Hello all. I have been looking around this site for a while but I never got to posting, though I have been interested in long-distance shooting for quite a while. I love looking on here for advice and different opinions, and am really hoping to get into this type of shooting and learn what I can.

Dang, just saw your post and all of us were rude to not give you a welcome. Well... Welcome! Share and ask here, we're used to it.

Right now my collection consists of a few rifles, a shotgun, and a couple pistols. My rifles are a Mosin Nagant, a Marlin 336 30-30 with a nikon prostaff shotgun hunter scope, and a Daniel Defense DDM4V1 AR in 223/556 with rear Magpul MBUS and a nikon p223 3-9 in a burris qd scope mount. The Marlin is set for hunting at 100 yards, and the DDM4 is set to 100 for the scope. So far I've only shot it out two 200. The ranges that I have been to have only had 100 up to 300 yards. Unfortunately I do not have access to longer ranges nor an actual distance rifle. I am hoping to get one soon. Right now I'm considering getting a 308 probably a Rem 700, but I am always up to suggestions.

Thank you rspeer

greatwhitebuffalo;
welcome to the hide , from another pa shooter! won't have any problem finding a suitable long range rig on this site.AND we have a 600 yd. range in new holland . soooo when your ready to stretch it out a little, you have a place to go.,,,,,dave

GrreatWhiteBuffalo, you have some of the same rifles I have (Marlin 336 in 30-30, and Daniel Defense DDM4V1). As for a LR rig a 308 is a good starter caliber with regards to availability of match ammo, barrel life, and ability to reach out to 1K yards, etc. If you reload your own ammo and want something that's not 'ballistically challenged' there are many other options to consider.

Yea I have been lurking around to see whats out there, there are a lot of beautiful setups. I actually go to a shop out in the new holland area, never knew there was a range like that out there. Will definitely have to check it out!

I just recently got the 336 havent really had a chance to take it out. I love the DDM4. It seems that 308 will be a good first choice as I do not reload yet. Though I am really hoping to get into that soon too.

Hey guys if I may, I'd like to ask a few more questions. Being very honest I must say I have never purchased a firearm online yet. How would this work? What would it be called so I can check to verify that my local ffl will accept it (even from an individual and not another ffl)? And what is the best/safest way for payment? My gratitude in advance.

It's quite simple and I've done it numerous times. If you are purchasing from a dealer online, you purchase the firearm first listing your FFL's info for shipping, then contact your FFL with the dealer's contact information and they will send them a copy of their current FFL. Once they receive that, the dealer will ship the firearm to your FFL. Once it arrives you will do the appropriate paperwork and take possession of the firearm.

If you are purchasing from an individual, make sure your FFL will accept shipments from an individual. If not, the person you are purchasing from needs to ship it from their FFL themselves. Basically the same process there.

It will help if your FFL shop has a web page detailing the process, otherwise just swing by and talk to them yourself. They will be able to give you the steps. If not, well it's time to find a new FFL...

Here's how my particular FFL handles transfers: Transfers « Coal Creek Armory

Hello to you both. I'm not too far from the Carlisle area myself.

I actually just got a rifle which I will be using as my long range rifle, and will possibly hunt with it from time to time as well. So I am going to need a scope and am asking for opinions on scopes and magnifications other members would recommend. As well as rings and the different heights.

Just wanted to post with an update. I have gotten a rifle and began setting things up on it. I'm hoping I am attaching the picture correctly. I do have higher quality pictures on my camera that I can upload later.

I'm hoping she will be the "one" for me too. The previous owner posted some great groupings of what they did. I have a feeling that this setup will shoot better than I will be able to for a while. But hey you have to start somewhere right? :p

So far from first looks its gone above expectations. It's very clear, the reticle is easy to use, it has great eye relief, and it's not too heavy. I can't wait to get it zeroed in and try the zero stop as well as adjustments at different distances.
