So, I think I am going to have to start reloading. I really want to and now I think it is my next step. I can group a 3" easy at 500 and 7ish" at a 1000 but after that they are all over the place. Even at 1000 you have to be a good shot and know your poi. I shoot a rem 700 5R 308 with leupold 6.5-20 glass. I am shooting 175 Southwest BTHP and can drive nails at 500 with them. Am I out of gun or out of ballistics? Is it barrel, ammo, shooter....hehe.....? I have only been shooting LR for about 8 months now but been a shooter my whole life.

I think those are damn impressive groups. 7" at a 1,000 yards with a .308 is pretty damn good. I think after that you are running out of both. Time for the Lapua magnum and 2,000 yards.

If I could shoot 7" groups at 1000 yds, I would never shoot again! I'm lucky to hold 16" to 20" groups at that distance in the wind. You are certainly doing something right to achieve this with a stock 5R. Are you shooting a 20" 5r? If so, you have probably reached the maximum range of that rifle. Nice shooting!

24 in barrel. Will be cut down soon to a 20" for my TABC can. I wasn't sure if that was a good group or not at a grand. I tried 168 A-Max and they were close to the same grouping. Hit 8-10 on a 10"x16" plate. Was thinking about Asym ammo but I could be pissing money away and the gun isnt going to get better.

If you want to reach further out, then it is time for a different caliber. 7" at 1000 yards with a .308 is damn good, and you most likely know it. Obviously you are a good shot, you have a good rifle and it likes these ammo. You are getting real close to the limit of what your rifle can do but you can always try to do better, just for the hell of it.
Next time you measure your groups, forget the beer bottle. It is well known that a bottle of Tequila gives you a more accurate reading ;)
Nevertheless, I would recommend drinking only AFTER you put the guns away; or is it one of these "non-alcoholic beverages"?
Great shooting!
