I found a great location for 800-1600 yard shooting, however, the location is in the high desert where a fire has passed through and burned all the natural vegetation. There is absolutely nothing to use for wind doping at the target location... or in between for that matter. Anybody use surveyors tape at the target location for wind speed and general direction? Is there a better system people are using? Or a better material?
My thought is to use a standard length of surveyors tape and record the "degree" of deflection on the tape and the corresponding wind MPH prior to a shooting session. This way I can compare the deflection I see in the scope while shooting to what I saw and documented before I get in the field.

It takes like a 2mph wind to make surveyors tape stick out at 90 degrees. I use it on my spotting scope stand in high power just to tell me direction - I don't know that you could use it to gauge velocity in any realistic way.

u can use it for direction, not much else...

if u want speed, get a few of these and put 1 near target, and 1 1/2 way down..

Not kidding about the bubbles!!! I was out in Louisiana visiting my daughter and grand daughter. Was out in the back blowing bubbles for Katie-Bug. I noticed that the bubbles were lasting the longest kind of time without popping and floating way on up into the air. So I thought, hey, that'd be a good way to see what the wind is doing at the range.

It really does work quite nicely. I'll have to find out the brand of bubbles, they seem to last a lot longer that others.

Course you might get some strange looks on the range when you pull out a bottle of bubbles and start blowing them.
