175gr. SMK's

Hey folks took your advice and dropped my load down to 43.5gr Varget and got these results 3 good hits and 1 flyer. I think its a 6 or 8 inch plate. Probably couldn't do it again but got the pic for memories.

Thanks Gunner I think I found the sweet spot. Now I have a itch to try 1000yds never even thought about shooting that far but sounds like fun.

My 20" FrankenSavage with 175SMK's seated to 2.815" consistently prints 5 rd groups @ 100 yds in the .3" to .4" with 43.5gr of Varget. Exact same results with 168gr A-Max.

Ladder test in .5 grain increments and you will find the magic load for your rifle, mine happened to be identical for the Hornady 168 and Sierra 175 (prone in the dirt on a bipod). Good luck and good shooting

Its simply amazing that so many 308 rifles shooting 175g SMK use 43.0-43.5 Varget. I actually use 43.0, its a laser beam. I tried 43.5 and my groups opened up and scattered.
43.0 still gets me to 2660 in my 24" Lothar Walther 1-12 twist, which is all but enough to reach out to the gold standard of 1000yds.

In my many 308's 43.1-43.4 is my low node with 44.5-44.8 being the high node. Brass and rifle depending... the velocity difference is 70-90 FPS.

I need to try Varget. I keep reading it doesn't throw well in a Dillon powder measure so I haven't tried it yet. I wish I had a single stage set up also.

Same loads and bullets mentioned here work with equal amounts of RL-15. Best .308 medicine out there.

I'd have to check my data again, but I recall having a low and high 'node' during my load development with the 175gr SMK's. I went with the high node, which put me at 44.4 grains of Varget.
