I'm looking for good 300 win mag hunting recipes, both long distance and short range loads! Please specify what game you hunt, bullet used, long or short range, muzzle velocity, powder/powder weight, and any other relevant information.

A good friend of mine who hunts every year uses the following for Elk:

300 Win Mag
Hornady 180 gr SST bullet
Federal Lg Rifle Magnum primer
60 gr of IMR-4895
COAL = 3.340"

makes 2880 fps in my rifle.

While the above is true, a little insight on new ways to skin a cat might have value.

For instance, on mule deer I have always used the 165 gr. flat base Hornady spire pt. It shoots a lot flatter for me at normal mule deer ranges. As far as the load, I have been using H4831 for more than 30 years in WW cases with Winchester LR primers, not magnum. MY LOAD, in MY rifle is between 79 & 80 grains, depending on lot #. Velocity is about 3050fps and my accuracy hovers around .75" X 5. BB

Someone's pet load isn't guaranteed to work in your rifle. It is not difficult to work up an excellent load via: OCW.

I'm well aware of this, I'm just trying to see what kind of bullets/MV people are using to hunt what kind of game at different ranges. I would of course develop my own load roughly based on somebody else's load. For example I'm curious what people use to hunt deer between 100 and 300 yards. I'm interested in maybe a 230 gr bullet to reduce meat damage.

Edit: I realize hunting deer at these ranges with a 300 win mag is sort of overkill, but I know people have done it in the past. I'm not planning on putting any heads on my wall so I'd probably go for a neck shot.

168 Barnes TTSX, 69.9 gr H4350, Fed 215M 3.340" COAL
I've used it for Moose, Mule Deer, and bear. Has good penetration.
Good accuracy @100 (on paper) and was comfortable out to 500yrds. Haven't shot any animal past 400 with it.

More a matter of where you hit a deer then what bullet you hit them with. A broadside hit in the ribs won't ruin more then a hand full of meat. A flat shooting 155 grn load will make good bullet placement much easier. A neck shot at 300 yds is a real challenge

Comment concerning reliance on data. While I strongly believe people should develop their own load by whatever means, there is merit in knowing where to start. As an example, I have a couple wildcats and did some searches for appropriate propellants. I found exactly what I was looking for without sacrificing barrel life. I could care less about duplicating someone's pet load, but there is value in having a place to start. Beats the hell out of multiple propellants and trips to the range and time, money and effort spent on your educated guesses. There is some worthwhile data available on 6mm.com relating to the 243Ackley, (for instance) that could have taken me a month to find out on my own.....just saying? BB

.300 Win mag hunting load:

Remington brass
Nosler 165 Bt's
77.5 H4831SC
24" factory barrel
3115 FPS
.5 groups regularly with it.

My deer load, but I'd stack it up against just about anything out there to around 500yds.

Winchester brass
180 gr Hornady Spirepoint
Federal GM 215M
76.5gr Reloader 22

I get just under 3100FPS out of a 26" 1:10.

I also use the 180 TSX over 75gr Reloader 22 and get 3100FPS. Both loads shoot under an inch @ 100 for me.

I was under the impression that a-max was more of a target bullet and less of a hunting bullet... What kind of game are you using it on?

Whitetail. The 208 mushrooms when it hits them and its usually a DRT.
Have taken 35-40 with 210's and 208's. the only real deference is the Berger blows up like a grenade while the amax stays more solid in structure

Here's an example of what a 208 will do. Shot her right between the eyes at 178 yards.

200 gr nosler partition over 69.5 gr of 4831 and a federal mag primer. This is my deer elk cariboo bear mule deer load. No meat damage on a whitetail
