I have the opportunity to pick up a 6x45 just wanted to get some options on the caliber. I know some will say it's light side for hogs but a .223 has killed a lot of them around here.

too much work for loosing prepped brass especially when the 223 works just fine, you could also look into the 300 BLkout though.

There are NO extra steps in making 6x45.

OP...get it, it's my favorite cartridge. If you want some load data I have some. It gives great performance with standard sized ar bolt, standard mags, and needs no special case prep. The bullet selection is outstanding.

What bullets you shooting at what speeds with what barrel?

I have a 6mmx45 as well. I don't remember the make. Its a 20" 1/8 twist AR-15 barrel. I have only tried up to a 90 gn bullets due to magazine length restrictions. Still working up loads but have shot the following with no pressure signs.
75 Hornady at 2900fps
85 Speer softpoint at 2800 (working with this bullet the most, as its a .400 BC and fairly cheap)
90 Sierra FMJBT at 2700 slight primer flattening

I have been using benchmark Benchmark and IMR 8208XBR. With both I have run out of case capacity before hitting pressure signs. I can't find either locally so I am working with TAC now, which may be a little to slow. Due to its powder density and small flake size I can get over 28 grains of capacity. Expecting low to mid 27's will be about as much as I want to shoot for pressure.

I dug this barrel out of the safe to hold me off from getting a Grendel or some 6mm variant. Once I realized that I don't have anywhere where I can shoot 600 yards with any frequency, and most times rarely past 200 yards, the economy involved won out. Low recoil, reported great barrel life and 6mm bullets aren't in demand locally all swayed me to play with this barrel some more. Brass prep is taking some 223 and using some imperial sizing wax run them thru a sizing die.

I was on the fence for a long time with this caliber.Decided to go with it and won't go back.
Awesome selection of 6mm varmint bullets, easy to load, more energy and accurate.
DEADLY on the rock chucks and coyotes this year.
58 Gr VMAX and H335 has been a good combo.

Thanks guys for your opinions. I still have not "pulled the trigger" but am seriously considering it....Delta4-3 Can you pm me the load data?

Thanks Again!

There is a little unit of not so mediocre guys at fort bragg that had a large number of 6x45's built for operational use, and the feedback from two of them suggested that it was satisfactory.

I had one in a 15" XP-100 and loved it.
Never shot a hog with it but I took alot of crows, groundhogs, and a few nice whitetails with it.
I think it would be great in an AR

450BM for hogs and deer if you like DRT but 6x45 is hard to beat for yotes.
A pro around here says 6mm is the way to go.
They drop right where they stand.
I been shooting one of Delta's 300BLK uppers the most lately.
It shoots 110 Vmax and 125 TNT's real good and will have to do till I can get a 6x45.

I have been shooting a 6x45mm AR for a year now, it is a Black Hole Weaponry 1:10 twist 20 inch that was cut down to 18.5 by a previous owner.

I started out with 62gr Barnes Varmint Grenades and 80 gr Nosler BTs thinking (varmint/deer/hogs) however I have since gone to just one bullet for all my shots.

Speer's Deepcurl 80gr sitting on 26.x grs of CFE223 with a CCI 450 primer in LCC brass.

I have seen nothing but great terminal performance since making the switch - this AR is becoming, BY FAR, my most favorite caliber and tool.

Try it, I think you'll like it.

Oh and the latest victim was Saturday night, a 150 lb boar quartering away at 245 yards. My holdover was 6+ inches on the 100 yard zero. Bullet entered right side (ribs) and traveled through internal cavity before exited out the left front shoulder.

6x45mm ain't no stinkin 223 in terms of bullet performance........ in my opinion.
