Hi there.

I'm having a 6.5x47 built and would like to use 130gr/140gr Berger and the new 129gr long range accubond when I can get some. Build will be done in a few weeks and I'm gathering components. Have some 130 and 140 hunting bergers, 100 pieces of brass and some cci450's. I was wondering if you could recommend a powder that would work well with the bullets I mention. Barrel will be 22-24" depending on weight. I would like a temp stable powder as I will also be hunting in cold temps -30. I have an 8lbs jug of H4831sc but I'm not sure that will work.

Thanks

Thanks all. Anyone able to share some speeds you are getting in 22-24" barrels? Will see if I can trade my H4831 for Varget.

Not 22-24", but I get the 130gr JLK to 2800fps from 21" and 2925fps from 26", with 41.7gr of H4350. I have never liked Varget, but have used the similar Reloder 15 and it is 50fps faster than H4350 but dirtier and I think more temp sensitive.

Good luck w/ your 6.5x47L

I use AR2208 (Varget equivalent) and also BM8208 (XBR 8208) in my .308 and also plan to use those powders on my 6.5x47

I use both Varget and H4350. Has anyone used another temperature stable powder, other than those two? I have tried CFE223 and Reloader 17 and 19. None of those were temp. stable.

From my testing over a Oehler 35 chrono the "Extreme" powders aren't as extreme as they claim to be......Example= Yesterday I shot the same exact load over the chrono that i shot a week before when the temp was 25 degree warmer and the results were not what you would think they should be. It was 93 degree and humid last weekend and yesterday morning when i shot it was 68 degree and less humid as a cool front passed through. I was shooting H4350 and the average speed was 37 ftps slower yesterday in the cooler weather than it was when i shot in 93 degree weather. 25 degree temp change produced 37 ftps slower velocity. This was over a 5 shot string. The group was still tight as it was last week but velocity definately went down more than what you would think H4350 would do. Varget does the same thing in my testing over the last couple years. It seems that they get affected by cooler weather but do great in the heat when other powders sky rocket and blow primers. Im not saying this to bash the extreme powders as i use them all the time i just wanted to share what ive seen in my personal testing.

All testing was done 12 ft from center of chrono to end of the barrel.

That's a good observation Down South, I do have to adjust my dope for temp with H4350 or Varget but it's very predictable. The others I mentioned I have found just to hard to keep up with. The over pressures are my biggest deterrent. I just picked up some Hodgdon Hybrid 100V an hour ago, which I'll try out over the next couple of months. It looks interesting.

Good luck, let us know how the Hybrid 100V works out.

I have observed temp variation w/ H4350 and H4831sc as well, but not as much as the 1.5fps/degree you are seeing; I'm in the 1fps/degree range. Some of this variation might be due to barrel temp differences, I don't know as there are lots of variables (including the chrono).

As for the chrono, its a Oehler 35, dont get much more accurate than that and the distance is measured from end of the barrel to center of the chrono. Also when i shoot i do not let rounds cook in a hot chamber. The bolt is open with round sitting in back, when im lined up and ready to go i close the bolt and let it rip so that shouldn't have been much of a factor. I thought it was kinda weird myself the numbers i was getting but it is what it is.

Thanks fellas. I have some my own temp testing as well. Tested mostly my 338 lm with retumbo and h1000 as well as my 6.5x55 with H4831sc. I saw 30 fps difference with the 338 lm between +25C and -20C and 10 fps difference for the 6.5x55 for the same temperature range. I have not tested my varget 308 load in colt temps but will this winter.
