Help on Barrel length 6.5x47L

I'm about a week out from getting my Deviant action and its coming down to the last few decisions. I have an AAC cyclone coming and because of that I'm having a hard time with my barrel length. The blank is 29" long and I was planning on leaving it as long as possible but with the extra 8" the can could add I'm havingsecond thoughts. A 35" barrel ddoesn't sound to handy. Was considering 22-24", but looking for what others have used with this round. Thanks.

I have a 24" a 25 1/8" and a 27" and they all shoot great.. Getting 2757fps (SD: 4 ES: 15 for 10 shots over the magneto speed) with 130 Bergers / Varget without any pressure signs out of the 24" barrel. I have a 16.5" in the works, can't wait to give that a run.

Thanks for the reply. I checked out your builds in your signature, very nice. I think 24" will be the minimum I cut it. I will probably default to whatever Beanland suggests.

Hey, I have a 21" Kreiger and a 26" Hart, 9 and 8 twist respectively.

21" will send 130gr JLK at 2800fps and 107gr SMK at 3000fps.
26" will send 130gr JLK at 2925fps and 107gr SMK at ~3200fps.

130gr powder: H4350
107gr powder: RL15

Maybe I need to back up on that 24" minimum thought. Running the ballistics, the speed from 2950 down to 2700 doesn't make much difference in the wind deflection. Elevation is always dialed so IDK... 30" total with the can attached sounds pretty tempting. Wish I knew if this barrel was gonna be "fast" or not. Bartlein 8 twist sendero contour.

No problem at all, but they are 1.325" OAL (JLK's are shorter than Berger's 130's, which are something like 1.40").

Just to add, I've got a 30 inch Krieger on mine and I haven't had much luck getting the 130s much past 3k. It will go some, but not like I'm gettin 3200 out of it. I think the cartridge is prety damn efficient and gonna make whatever it will make out of a reasonable length barrel. Especially if you add a can.

My were 0.167" when they started life. Both of my 6.5x47 barrels are from same reamer.

Talked to Jon today, he said most 6.4L he sets up are in the 24-25" range. I think I will go with that also. 24"+8" can will be long but manageable.

Looks like my rifle is up next at Jon's, after talking to him I settled on 25" for the build. Still a little undecided but I'm sure it'll be sweet and hopefully not to terrible long when my can comes in.

sweet! Don't sweat +/- 1-2" or +/- 50-75fps... it is meaningless in the real world. Just enjoy the bugholes you shoot! You will be able to hit a fly's ass at 100yds!

I have two shilens in 6.5x47. One in 26" the other in 30" and I don't see the gain in velocity in the 30" that I was expecting. I'm considering cutting it down.
