Okay so I have a fully built .308 but looking for better performance and trying to get into this run and gun comps. I want to pick up a 6.5 barrel and have it chambered for my .308 and just swap barrels as I need. I wish I had the funds to build a second rifle but I don't. So I have the barrel ordered and looking for a brake.
A buddy tells me that he has a JP recoil eliminator and the thing is the best brake on the market... Okay but it looks like, holy hell that thing is huge. So I am running a holland radial on my 308 and pretty happy with it. I know that with a 6.5 the recoil is less to begin with but I want the best brake out there for fast follow up shooting and seeing impacts for corrections.
Also since I am going to make the jump to a 6.5 creedmoor I was looking for recommendations for brass and bullets. I found some Hornady brass, not sure if anyone else makes 6.5 creedmoor brass but any info would be great. Also what bullet should I pick up? My smith really likes the 142gr SMK's. this setup is going to be for comps like PRS stuff and tactical shooting so please keep that in mind. I saw that berger has some nice 140gr but just worried about the VLD's I know they can be really picky. I have been reloading for my 308 for a while so I have all te equipment.
Thanks for any help, I am lost/new with the 6.5 and I am trying to save some time and load development. Thanks again and happy shooting.

Hornady brass and 140 A-max bullets work well over 41.5 gr H4350. As good as 0.375 MoA. Both are plentiful in supply. Can't remember if its Nosler or Norma that also makes 6.5CM brass. I just bought a buncha Hornady, and didn't look back.

There's a number of companies that make a variety of bullet weights, so plenty of opportunity to try other stuff.

Without a brake I can easily see bullets kick up dirt at 500 yards.

My 6.5CM made my 308 obsolete.

You can just use the Bennie Cooley Large Profile brake it works just as good as the Eliminator.
That was told to me straight from JP Rifles.
Ive also run both of them on my MaTen and I prefer the Cooley brake.

But I popped a APA Fat Bastard on my 308 bolt and my god is that brake effective. Made it feel like a 223
If I had to run a brake again it would be one of the two

on a 6.5 just about any break will work great, there is so little recoil to start with, cutting down is very easy. As for ammo, buy a few boxes of factory loaded 6.5 in various bullet weight and test for accuracy and velocity, if they work just duplicate the recipe on the back of the box. That's what I did and couldn't be happier.

In addition to the JP Cooley Break also pick up the JP adjustable gas block. Properly tuning your gas system will greatly aid in quick follow up shots. My LR-308 with a Cooley break and adjusted gas system; the cross hair barely moves during recoil.

Thanks for the information guy. I found some Hornady 6.5 140 gr A-max bullets and some SMK 142gr to start with. I am waiting for the new barrel but in the mean time I will be loading up some ladder test. So it's ready to go. I like the way the Bennie Cooley muzzle brake looks. I like that a lot better than the JP big thing. Thanks for the recommendation. So between the two you liked the Cooley design better? I like that it has ports on the top to help keep it down. I know that recoil is not that serious on it but as a comp gun I want to be able to spot impacts at 200 yards if possible, or as close to it as possible.

Best regards,
Oscar

While not on a bolt gun I have one of the JP large profile Bennie Cooley brakes on my JP LRP-07 in 6.5CM. Recoil shooting 140s is minimal, spotting your own hits at 200 and further is easy. Rifle hardly moves.

I have a JP RE in 5/8x24 still in box if interested. Just PM me. I run one on an SPR gas gun. (MK12) and recoil is non existent. I have come to love Precision Armament's Brakes though, the M11 works great on my 5R, and the M41 severe duty is tops, but is ported all around and kicks up a lil dirt in prone, but seems better than my Cooley on a 6.5CM.

If you must have a brake, i suggest the apa little bastard. Extremely effective and not gawd awful ugly likecthe ones you are considering.

Thanks again for the input gentlemen. I am not looking I buy right now because I am still waiting on my barrel. I know that JP recoil eliminator is big and ugly but I am looking for maximum effectiveness. I do like the look of that Bennie Cooley brake as well. I like the ports on top. I am running a holland radial on my 308 and that is pretty good as well.... It's just one of those things that you go back and forth with. I do really appreciate the input and I have eliminated some brakes and narrowed the field down to a couple...
