I have an AI AE MkIII and I am looking at scope mounts. I like the tried and true AI mount but I am also looking at the Spuhr. Anybody have a Spuhr mounted on the dovetail? I was talking with the nice folks at Mile High and learned when mounting the Spuhr on the dovetail you can only mount it in one position making eye relief a possible issue. Of course the solution would be to get an aftermarket pic rail for the Spuhr but the AI mount offers more flexibility on the dovetail. Stick with the AI mount or bite the bullet and shell out for the pic rail and Spuhr?

I'm not sure if the MKIII is setup the same as my AW. But mine has two positions the mount can be set in. I have no problem running a AI dovetail mount and getting good if not great eye relief.

AE Mk3 is picatinny only, can't use the AI or Spuhr dovetail mounts.

Problem with putting a picatinny Spuhr on the factory AE rail is the interrupted slots, pick up a Murphy continuous slotted base and problem solved.

If you run into eye relief issues there are 6 holes in the top of the AE receivers and you can mount the rail in 2 locations, one more forward, one more rearward.

A 1.18" high Spuhr + Murphy rail closely duplicates the height of a scope mounted in an AI mount on the factory AI AE picatinny rail.

One head scratcher I have on the Murphy bases for the AE is he could have made them the full length of the receiver for maximum mounting flexibility and used all 6 screws available in the top of the AE receiver for additional strength but instead he chose to make the rail the same length as the original rail and use only 4 of the holes. I have a regular Murphy AE rail and Spuhr on my AE Mk3 right now but I keep kicking around the idea of having him make a longer rail that utilizes all 6 screws. It's not necessary but would be one of those "just because" things.

Somebody's got to ask the obvious question here...

Why?

If the normal AI solution works fine, and mounts well, and works for you, why waste time and money and headache buying a new mount and a new base just to rejigger everything back to exactly where you were before (save a lighter wallet)? What does it do that your existing mount does not?

Any chance of a photo of your setup please?

I don't really have a good answer to "why?" other than sometimes I get stupidly OCD about stuff even if it really doesn't matter. When I replaced the factory rail so I could use the Spuhr and saw 6 rail mounting holes on the top of the receiver the first thing I thought was "why not make the rail about .750" longer to cover the entire length of the receiver from the rear up to the recoil lug and utilize all 6 mounting holes?" That thought occurred about 4 months ago when I was swapping the factory rail, AI mount, and SWFA 5-20 for a Murphy rail, Spuhr mount, and S&B 5-25-- and I still haven't got the longer 6 screw rail idea out of my head even though the factory method of attachment and the standard Murphy AE rail works perfectly and provides you with 2 rail mounting options (rearwards & forwards.)

Cameron will make a new base for $125 or so and that might be worth it just so I can stop thinking about it. Again, stupidly OCD about things that I don't need to worry about. :D

I'll try and remember to dig up a picture when I get home, but it's just an AE Mk3 with the Murphy rail and a 1.18" high picatinny Spuhr holding an S&B 5-25 DT H2CMR.

I must possess this same OCD disorder. I would really like to see a picture since you and I have the same rigs. Thanks.
