I'm looking into re-barreling my 700 in 308 and I'm trying to pick out a barrel. I plan on shooting factory and hand loaded 175gr SMKs and 178gr AMAX at paper and steel from 100 to 1000+ with it. I was leaning toward a 24 inch barrel, M40 contour (7ish?) and the 1-11 twist rate was recommended to me. I'm familiar with 1-10, 1-11.25 and 1-12 for 308 but not 1-11.

Anyone else tried 1-11 on a 308? Thoughts?

I had the same question... Why there 1:10 and 1:12, but the 11 is 1:11.25. I was told that it was to keep the 175+ gn bullets supersonic past 1000 yds. Now that being said, I know lots of people that shoot 1:10 at 1000, and lots of people that their 1:12 will stabilize the 175's just fine. I guess some mathematician came up with the 1:11.25.

I'll be doing a 11 on mine from my understanding as per hearing the 11.25 derived from some type of military standard for the .308 don't quote me on this though.

...British L1A1 was factory-equipped w.1-11 barrel, suited to push .308 bullets from 144 to 155 grs.at the traditional 7,62nato speed ,if memory don't fool me_

I run a 1-11 Schnieder P5, 24" sr60 contour .308.

I went with 1-11 because that is what Gary Schnieder recommended. Who am I to argue?
It shoots lights out.
The Marine Corps runs a 1-12 and there is no issue with the 175's.

My factory Tikka Varmint barrel is 1-11 and it really likes the 178gr Amax over 43gr of Varget.

I also think 1:11 twist rate will be fine as well. Example: I have a Surgeon Scalpel in .308 with a 20" Krieger barrel 1:11 twist and #10 MTU contour. She is 1/4 MOA without me and loves 175 gr SMKs and can make it to 1000. Good luck.
