16-18 inch shorty rifles

Wonder how long it'll take for this 'fad' to melt away??

It's hardly faddish. It's math (the 'Hide is replete with Mathletes). The 7.62x51 was made for a 22" 1:12" twist barrel, but at 16" you are running somewhere around 95% efficient. While you can get more velocity from a longer barrel, depending on the application, you may not need it. And don't discount that one of the reasons barrels were longer was for the extended sight radius. With optics, heavier projectiles and faster twist barrels you can achieve as much as Olin did with ball powder when they developed the round to replace the 30-06.

Now back to short guns!

I need to get my shorty painted up so I can post up pics. Stevens 200 .308 with a 16" mcGowen with just over 4500 rounds on it right now. Sitting in a Manners TF2, CDI DBM, Bushnell HDMR scope. My usual load is 45gr H4895 behind a 175 SMK. Working on a 155 Palma SMK load and have shot up to 49gr so far and only have a little bit stiffer bolt life. 47.5gr shot the best today though.

Hopeful longer than it took the "fad" of people thinking they need a 26" barrel on a .308 to fade away. The proof is in the numbers. As kick was assome folks think the .308 is, it just does not benefit greatly with a long ass barrel.

Fads. Chahh. I'm so new age you don't even know.. Chahh.

I got a ball park on 208's in the AAC 308 1:8 18" barrel today. With Varget, Berger's max for the 210 class is 39.1 and Hodgdon's max for the 208 a-max is 41.5 so I loaded a couple at 39.1 = 2247fps and 41.3 put me at 2348fps

Thanks. PCR builds some sweet rifles and were awesome to deal with,
It's just a Manners TF2 stock. The folding mechanism is molded in when the stock is made.

wow so many pretty shorty..anyone ever cut 24" barrel to 16-18" im about to do it on my rem 5r milspec 308

Same set up as my previous posts but the prototype Mirage ULR has been swapped out to an updated version.

Deadly0311, that is awesome!

i love those KMW stocks, a bit hard to come by over here though

Here is mine... Can't get much shorter without SBR'ing it. Folder stock is due in next week..... soo that should shorten up even more.

Rem 700 AAC SD w/ Single Port Brake 16 ish..."
Night Force 20 MOA Rail
Weaver Tact GS 3-9-40 MIL/MIL
Weaver Tac Rings (6 Screws)
V-Tac Sling
BlackHawk Bipod Swivel/Tilt
KRG Bolt Knob
*CEREKOTE* Tanish/FDE mix Action...

**FOLDER - CHOATE due is next week...

*My plan on this was a very good back pack rifle in .308..... and to keep the cost as LOW as possible without going all out.

Thanks,
Matt (LEO SOUTH GA.)

Nice! Matt, How is the brake timed? Guessing peel or crush washer that appears internal?

Mark

Mark5pt56,

The brake is the AAC single port. It came with a crush washer and just happened to time up perfect with one hard turn and the thread lock they provided.

I shot the rifle today... VERY IMPRESSED. It really really loves Black Hills 175 Match.

Matt.

Matt, Tks! Pretty effective brake?

How significant is the difference in muzzle blast / noise in an 18 inch 308 as opposed to 20-22 inches?

I have a 20 and a22 and I am strongly considering going with 18 in my upcoming build.

Atlshaun,

It is NOT the blast - noise as much as it is the recoil picking up a great deal.

My 16" with the AAC on is VERY VERY light on recoil and I do not notice the blast... but the neighors on the range do :)

Matt.

Atlshaun,

Not a problem at all... If your looking at doing an 18".... go ahead and cut it down to just over 16" to keep it legal but as short as you can go. You really do NOT loose much velocity/FPS and its makes a VERY VERY handy and manueverable rifle.

Mossberg MVP Varmint 5.56 cut to 18" with wilson combat birdcage and leupold Mark AR mod 1. Love it

Welcome to budget rifle town, population: ME

I have one of these and was thinking of cutting it down to 17 in. Have you noticed any difference in performance? I am also thinking of putting a brake on it, Have been looking at the JP Eliminator or the Miculek brake. One more question what loads are you shooting? Thanks, Travis

Just cut my Savage11 308 fom 22" to 18". Did the factory sporter barrel, just to be sure before committing to the chop on my varmint profile. I freaikng love it!! Did this one myself, but think the next one is being sent so it can get threads and a protector.
Love the way it feels, I think it will be aweful handy in the field.
Pics will come when finished, as there are so many good looking rifles in this thread.

Hey bro, I cut it before shooting it so i have no shift to report. Been very constrained with ammo testing due to budget and my local range but it shoots sub moa with american eagle 50gr ballistic tips - not good but, dented cases and bad primers. 55gr fmj remington umc is landing around 1.5 moa, some times a little better. Need to get the press out and cook up some 60gr loads as i suspect they will work pretty well in the 1:9 barrel

Thanks for the reply ThunderBeard. Mine doesn't seem to like shooting the 55gr in the AR cheap stuff and in the prvi but seems to shoot the 62gr in the PMC stuff ok. Hoping that I can try some 77gr hornady match next week to see how they shoot. Hoping tho get it to shoot sub moa.

18" Rem 700.jpgYa I just realize my pic didnt load from iPhone......I'm new to this media techs stuff lol.

I just made a purchase on this 18" .308 from APRS.

APRS, (ACE PRECISION RIFLE SYSTEMS) Is an Australian based Company working out of the Nightforce HQ.

The rifle consists of a Stiller Predator Action. with APRS logo.
Krieger 18" Match Barrel
Thruster Muzzle Brake
Rifle Basix Trigger
Manners T5-A stock with Mini Chassis
10rd AI MAG
Badger EFR
Pelican Hard Case as standard.

I'll mount my Razor HD on it. and load up some 168gr A'max's and see how far my skills will let me.

That is very sweet indeed, well done.

Strike33, you've got to quit posting pics of it without a scope...get some glass on it and go shoot. Looks awesome, good thing you left some black on it or you might lose it haha

Well played sir! it's actually back at PCR having the rails and bipod coated..as for glass its either sell a testicle or bed some old rich lady. Hopefully I can get a Mark 6 on it soon

Here's mine - a Savage 16 SS LH action - Criterion light varmint contour 18" threaded barrel (cut by ADCO) - PWS FSC30 flash hider - Custom stainless milled bolt handle - Oversize trued lug - Factory hinged floor plate bottom metal - dark eagle custom 10 round magazines -McMillan HTG, pillars, swirl (olive, light brown, tan)
It shoots and I like it. I am done with 14lb rifles.

hey do you have to engrave the action for sbr? and whats the wait time? can you put on different barrels shorter than 16in with just 1 action?

Fast Question -

Have an old pre64 Model 70 Winchester in 270 Winchester that is going to need to be rebarreled eventually -

I would like to do a short barrel -16" but I don't know what caliber

It is a long action but I don't know if I could chamber and feed a caliber from the 308 family.

What do you guys think?
