Building a Savage fv-sr in a tacticool stock. Will do some hunting mostly range shooting 50 and 100 yards. Educate me please. Eyes are not great and I tend to like higher magnification. Recommendations and advice needed. Would prefer 1 inch tube as I have rings. Thanks

Have been looking at Vortex 6x18x44 ao scope and my rings are setup for it. I can clear a 50mm obj ao barely. Just have seen a lot of non ao scopes on 22lrs here and was wondering because of cost differences if I s hould be looking at them. I haven't had a non ao scope in years and was curious is all?

Have to look at clearance between the ocular and bolt handle also. Rimfire scopes do not have to come out of a blister pack from Wally World. All up tactical scopes (good glass & reticle) are a pleasure to use on a 22, especially out past 50 yards.

If you are shooting at 50 and 100 you will want a scope with AO. Most non adjustable scopes come from the factory set parallax free at 100 if they are center-fire scopes, rim fire scopes come set at 50 yards. If you are shooting at varying ranges the AO will allow parallax elimination at varying distances, some as low as 15 yards. With a rim fire I wouldn't have a non AO scope, never know when you will want to shoot at 25 yards, or 30 or .....

On the opposite side, I've a parallax adjust. Weaver 36x 44 on my .22 range-only rifle ,w.1" rings_ (Same eye problems here,by the way)
The only thing I can hunt here and seriously hit is a fly, if still on the white bullseye sides at 50mt., of course, but I never need to bring with me any spotting scope, if the shooting distance is 100mt or less_
when I've mounted on the same rifle an old, non adjust., 8x 56 Schmidt-Bender, inside the 100mts I've never suffered big parallax problems, aside the obvious less magnification_

Thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna stick with the Vortex 6x18x44 AO. Got to put my hands on one yesterday and I liked it.Saw some nice Nikons and others butt no ao in same price hence my questions. will have to order as sportsmans warehouse is only local with it and they wont pricematch anything on the internet and were 50 dollars higher plus 9 3/4 sales tax talking 75 bucks more. Not an option for me.

Definitely get the AO scope.
When I purchased my Savage last year it came kitted with a non-AO Bushnell rimfire scope...parallax adjusted for 50yds, where it could shoot dime size 5 shot groups.
I spent a frustrating couple of months trying to get good groupings at 100m. Adjusted stock screws torque, set the trigger to 1.5 ibs...but my best groups were in the 2" range.
On the advice of people on this forum I purchased a decent tactical style scope with sidewheel AO (a Hawke Tactical Sidewinder).
Now .75" groups are possible...1.25" is average and 2" means either there is a 20mph gusty wind or I'm still feeling the effects of last nights scotch.

Get the scope you want.

I should've stated in my last post here that using the rings you have as a determining factor for a scope purchase is rather backwards.

Get the rifle...get the scope.... then get base and rings. Rings are cheap...replace them. Rifles and scopes are expensive.

Should have stated that I had planned the build out all parts previous and was having last minute q's. If I would have decided on a different scope rings would not have been a factor, I would have replaced. On another note had an older beeman 3x9x30 ao air rifle scope laying around so what the heck. Put 100 rounds through it by the end shot a 10 shot group a quarter would cover at 50 yds. Was happy with rifles performance except fte's. Got bad at about 60 rounds. Was shooting cci sv. Gonna read some about subject to see what to do. Drew 6 dots about 1/4 " and six shots all butt 1 touched dot and I feel I pulled that one, definitely should be some nervous squirrels around here.
