Guys,

I might be taking a new job that will require a move from Kentucky to Dallas. I will happily move to the great state of Texas, but I need some intel. Where is the best long rifle range (1000+ yds) within a hour of DFW? And best gun store to find long range shooting supplies/ammo(mainly)? Most gear I order online, but a good local shop is nice for class 3 stuff and odds and ends. Thanks for the advice!

It probably depends on where you end up living. I am in Plano (20-30) min north of downtown dallas and I shoot at top gun (topgunshootingclub.com) is located in Leonard (30-40) min north of Plano. I have been going to Atwell Tactical (atwelltactical.com) for my gun smithing and class 3 stuff. He does everything from a shop at his house after work.

I would recommend going to TacPro shooting center Tac Pro Shooting Center - The future of firearms training
It is about a 1 hour drive from Fort Worth and a 2 hour drive from most points in Dallas. They have a 1000 yard range and a very good setup & the nice thing is that it is far enough away that you don't get all the city idiots there. You do have to be a member to shoot at the 1000 yard range and take a test, but that also helps keep the idiots out. The 100 to 200 yard range is open to anyone and then the 300-1000 is for members, but you have to take a test to shoot past the 500 yard mark.
They also have some good shotgun and handgun ranges as well.

Most likely Frisco to Celina area.
Take the Dallas North Tollway South to the George Bush Freeway (161), head west till you hit Highway 30 and then head west till you get to Tacpro, All told should be about 2 hours smooth driving.

Thanks that sounds like a good range. And I love a place that welcomes 50 BMGs!!! How much is it to be a member? No problem with the qual. Not sure I just want anyone lobbing rounds at a grand with the flat ground in TX.

I think it's like $200 or something for the first year and then it's $100 each year after that.

They still accepting members?

Yes. I'm a member and my shooting buddy joined yesterday. Great people out there. You need to be a member to shoot on the 1000yd range. You're limited to 500 yards until you shoot a 1000yd qualifier (I'm fairly certain it's insurance driven, also keeps the bubbas out.) Next 1000yd qual is on September 15th. Lots of other perks come with the membership. First year is $200, don't know about subsequent years as I have only been a member for about 3 months so far.

I try to make it out there once or twice a month. Also, Mary's over in Thrawn, TX has some damn good chicken fried steak.

You don't need to be a member to shoot 1k at Tac Pro, simply do the qualifier and your GTG, Top Gun is only 500 yards, but I like it, but I only go early on Fridays because it gets busy on weekends with .........., Tiger Valley sometimes has open shoots, Waco is a long drive but worth it, I shoot in a lot of local club pistol/shotgun/carbine/rim fire matches, so hit me up when you get here, as for C3 items we have many choices, I use David Whitson aka 737Shark, his house/shop is in Plano.

Well, I hope you find your way to Texas! I live NE of Dallas on a farm with the ability to shoot past most weapon system's effective ranges.....and am offering you an invitation to come shoot whenever it's convenient for both of us. There's not a lot of long range shooters here in Paris, and I'm always looking to shoot with others when possible.

Oh, that offer goes to any safe, responsible shooters in the area too. :)

Thank you. I should be in TX after the first of the year. This is why I love the members on SH. For the most part all great guys!
