ok i'm a land lubber and don't know much about waders. from some researching, insulated booted waders would be the way to go, don't know if plain ol' rubber or neoprene would be better.

started goose hunting a few years ago, trying know to free myself up from fields and start getting into marshy areas, mostly just for retrieving in waist deep water (muck).

but the budget is tight, is there a "usable" chest wader out there that'll due for under $100.00?

Not really. I don't mean to be an a-hole but anything in that price range is going to either fail very quickly or never work in the first place. Personally, I use Cabela's goretex waders and layer appropriately underneath. They're around $250 but I've used them from early October through January in cold Idaho temps without a problem for two big seasons now.

+This. No free lunch. Buy once cry once. You'll be glad you did. This from the guy who started 30 yrs. ago w/ $6 Kmart plastic waders and $5 RED Keds tennis shoes. I now save up and use the Goretex light weights w/ fleece underneath when it's really frosty. Gonna play, ya gotta pay. Bite the bullet, sell some shit, rob a bank, put the ole lady on the street corner.....whatever ya gotta do. Mine have lasted for 6 years now and THIS year sprung a leak.....gonna put on some neoprene glue and use em for another 6. Good luck! Duckie season is only weeks away!

Probably the best change in waterfowling for me was switching to non-insulated waders. Much much easier to move around in. The trick is to figure out a good system for insulating, based on air/water temps. I usually wear heavy underarmour polypro with varied thickness/layers of fleece. This is the pair I have and they are holding up well. To each his own...

Unfortunately there is no cheap way into waders for cold weather. Waterfowling might be the only sport/hobby that is more expensive than long rang shooting. I go thru waders ever couple years, depending on underwater sticks, breaking ice and melting them on heaters. I agree with Idaho, Cabelas makes about the best wader out there. Lacrosse isn't bad either. I like 1200 gram thinsulate boots, filson heavy wool over the calf socks, drake fleece wader pants, Avery thermal top, filson heavy wool guides sweater and a drake wear pull over. I only wear a parka when is raining. I've hunted from Saskatkewan to Texas. You can always take gear off if your hot. I don't waste money on a decoy bag either, take a look at the MTM hunting box. All your gear stays dry and you have a place to sit.
