So until today I had not developed a load for my AIAE Mk III. I am running the AINA 1/10 18” Barrel.

I had some .308 loads worked up for a different rifle, which worked ok with 1-moa’ish results. In the mayhem of reloading scarcity I picked up a few boxes of FGMM 175 loads which shot 3/8 MOA. This motivated my load development.

On to the test,

175SMK
Varget 42.3-45.0
Hornady match once fired brass, FL Sized, Trimmed, Prepped
FGMM LR Primer’s
COAL 2.800”

I am new to interpreting OCW results as a new user. I was impressed the entire range of loads shot within MOA mostly.

I hit some pressure signs at 44.4 concluding with a sticky bolt on 45.0. Although I wish the 45.0 load would have worked, as it was basically a dead ringer and probably has some good velocity behind it.

From 42.6 to 43.8 all shot very similar minus the round I pulled. Although 42.9 and 43.5 trend left POI. 42.6 shot identical to the FGMM 175 but were too close on the low side to 42.3 which scattered. I am inclined to interpret the results as loading to 43.0 grains (to make it easy) would be a pressure tolerant load. That gives enough change from 42.6-43.8 to fall in the same accuracy realm.

I have other head stamps, which will be used in the future such as Winchester (WIN) and a gaggle of once fired Federal (FC). What is the best way to pick a load which should work across the spectrum?

Thanks

42.6-43.2 looks pretty good to me. You could run another OCW and vary only 0.2 Grs working around your chosen charge of 43Gr for confirmation. If that works time to work on OAL/Seating Depth for fine tuning. Realize that different brass has differing internal volumes which will work against a universal load if you are trying to achieve max accuracy.

Good Shooting!

You could probably load longer. You have the room in the mags, just make sure you're not into the lands. I haven't developed a load for my AX308 1/10 yet but I shot my r700 sps load out of it. 44.7 varget 175smk 2.820 in lapua brass. It shot 1/2 Moa with no signs of pressure. Can't wait to actually work it's own load up

Yeah I will play with the COAL after I confirm my charge weight is there

Buy a set of measuring tools, and use them. Determine the OAL BTO and start .01 off the lands with SMKs.

I just checked my notes. A 175 smk in my AX308 bartlein will touch the lands at 2.841". The AE mag can go up to 2.900 easy, that would be very bad to load that long. The AX mag can go even longer. My Remington sps v needed 2.960 to reach the lands

I'm about to load up some to test. I'm going to start at 2.820 which will keep me .020 off lands.

In my experience with Winchester and Hornady match brass the nodes tend to be in the 43-43.2 and 44.8-45 charge weights with varget and with Lapua brass drop those back by .2-.4 grains. These have worked in all of my various 308’s, 18”-26” factory and custom barrels... Your pics look to tell the same story. My 18" AAC barrel likes the 43.2 the best and I am right around 2480 with it jumping around .030", but it is nitrated so it may a little faster than a standard barrel.

You are spot on. I did some measuring tonight and came up with a 175 SMK touching at 2.838" and it looks like a mag will hold them up to 2.900ish

Thanks for your input. I just loaded up 9 more to test 42.8, 43.0, 43.2. Hopefully if they all shoot I got most of the process done.

When you guys do your last round of OCW do you shoot the groups individually again or shoot three groups of 42.8, 43.0, 43.2 (Over each other)

In my AIAE MK III 308, 24" Lothar Walther 1/12 twist. I use 175g SMK, with 43.0 Varget with Lapua brass and 210m primers.
Loaded to 2.820
I get excellent results. Like you, I also had awesome groups at 45.0 but primers were slightly flattened.
