I realized my 1st rifle a Rem 30-06 sportsman 78 action has been sitting in my safe for sentimental reasons for yrs. I have arrived to world of reloading and custom rifles. I would like to build this action into a tack driver to pass on to my son. I am assuming this old action is based off the Rem 700.

Where would you professionals start if you were going to pass it on to your son? THX for your input and contributing to a heirloom.

T-1,
Build anything on the 78 that you would on a 700. There is nothing wrong with them and just a rebadged 700 and cheaper stock. The last one I built was a 308 tactical and it was a tack driver.

I have owned a couple of the '78's and they shot very well. Like said above, a rebadged 700. True it like anything else, put on a good barrel and it will do well. Just my 2 cents.

This is what I had done with mine. Shilen No 7 barrel chambered in .30-06, McMillan HTG stock, PTG steel trigger guard assembly. I will say, it is for shooting, not for carrying. It's heavvier than I anticipated, may have to have the barrel fluted.
