Gunsmithing How are you holding short AR barrels?

I made an extension for threading short AR barrels awhile back that basically replaces the receiver extension for reaching through the head stock.

Now I need to cut down and re thread a dedicated 22 conversion barrel that has the extension machined directly into it. Anyone make a fixture that is basically just the front of an AR upper and you clamp it down with a normal barrel nut? Looks like one will just fit through my spindle bore.

Why not just chuck up on it? It's always worked for me. I just use a 4 jaw and indicate the bore.

Two reasons.

1. This particular barrel is going down to 4.5" so there just isn't enough meat to grab onto due to the contour.

2. I need to be able to coaxially indicate it for suppressor use.

If it wasn't for #1 I'd try it and see if it was coaxially acceptable.

How about using an action truing fixture. The type that is a 10" or so tube 3" od with two sets of 4 bolts spaced 3 to 4 inches apart

I use this and it works like a charm. I've done mark 2-3 pistols in it easy. Can do a barrel down to about 6-7"

Lol. My wife says I have OCD over my tools and shop. I wipe my stuff down all the time. Can't help it. I don't have the work load you bigtimers have so I can stay on top of it. I do use it though...I swear! Here's a mark 2 in that fixture.

Why not just grab the chamber end with the chuck and use a steady rest to support the other end. Or use an action truing jig.

Something similar to an action truing jig or custom cut some chuck jaws.

Good call, I dont know why I didnt think about that style action jig.
