    I have a .243 Rem 700 - completely stock, almost new.

    I have decided I want a .223 instead.

What should I do - sell the .243, buy a .223 then work it up OR rebarrel and try to sell the factory heavy barrel?

This will be a range / target gun to be shared with my boys and will likely end up in another stock of some sort, but not an expensive project.

What do you recommend and why?

If you rebarrled the 243 to 223 you have the wrong bolt face. The bolt will have to be changed. I would sell and start over.

you are better off selling the 243 and getting a 223. to re barrel the 243 you would also have to get a different bolt because 223 uses a different bolt face than 243.

Gander does trade ins and I think Cabelas does as well. Might wanna see what they offer. If not you could alway put an ad for a trade. Just will have to go through an FFL in CO.

You will never get anything close to what you want for it. Sell it on a local gun classifieds web page and use that cash to buy what you want. Those guys who do trade in really screw you over. I once was going to trade in an HK USPC 40 LEM because I was strapped for cash and the guys at the Cabelas down here in Lehi offered me 250 buck. The Damn gun didnt even have a full box through it. Since then I have made it my quest to not let people get screwed on trade ins

Yeah dude just sell it on a forum and start over, I would not try to sell/trade in any local gun store, cabelas, or any of it. Private party to private party transactions are always a better deal... For both parties as long as you know the value of yours and their items.
