Just wanted to know where people were seating 7mm 168gr Berger VLD Huntings off the lands, going to be on a 280 AI but 7mm mag shooters or anyone shooting these projectiles input is welcome. Thanks!

Presumably Gunwerks has tried about everything with this bullet. These things are hard to get to behave in many (if not most) rifles.

Turns out GW is having these things seated .070" off the lands. Seventy thousandths... that is, in their factory ammo. And it shoots very well, in the rifles I've seen it work thru (which are two, but hey)...

I've had clients seat these things nearly all over the map. The seventy off that Gunwerks is using most likely came from Berger... I'd at least try that in addition to seating against the lands. There are likely several different places that'll work.

Stanley- I run my 280AI with the 168 VLDs as close to the lands as I can get them. I choose not to jam because being a hunting rifle, I unload the chamber frequently and don't care to have any issues with a bullet lodged in the throat- know what I mean?

Thank you for the input everyone, this will be a long range hunting rifle so I probably will avoid jamming them into the lands, so I guess I'll comply with bergers recommended method and start .010" out, then .030, .050, .070, and .090 to see which yields the best groups and tweak down from there.

Jam to .070 off is a damn big difference and it can be anywhere in between. You're definitely on the right track using Berger's suggested method to find correct depth for your rifle.
IMHO, the 168 SMK is much easier to get shooting well and they cost less too. You just might want to give them a try.

I jam mine 10 thou. Never pulled a bullet ejecting an unfired round yet.

So I will end up doing their seating depth test, but enough people have said to jam 'em, for that to be a likely sweet spot, my question now is, if I jam them, will pushing the bullet into the lands push the projectile into the case, thus changing the COAL? I have redding S dies and will be using .002 undersized neck tension, is this enough to keep the projectiles from pushing into the case when pressed to the lands/keep it from being pulled out if an unfired cartridge is extracted?
