Hey all,

My rifle has been through enough re-configurations now that I've bought some new foam to re-cut for the inside of the hard case.

I'm looking for ideas on how to lay things out and would value some pictures of yours (and what you would do differently if anything).

Thanks!

Remember, items that don't need much padding like torque wrenches can be stored up and down to take up less real estate.

Also, there are three layers of foam. You can use all three if you are creative. I store a rear bag under the stock of the rifle in the third layer. I also store a PVC tube with solvent and oil and a torque screwdriver in the third layer under the tool box.

I used open cell foam on these, but the last one I did I used 2.2lb closed cell foam and I will never go back. It is easier to work with and more durable. Also, I glue the two bottom pieces together when I am done cutting. It makes them much easier to use.

Also. If I did it over, I would leave enough clear space under the rifle for a 10 round mag to stay in the rifle.

I did the same as ddd, under the rifle in the third layer in two places are desiccant tins( the ones that look like sardine cans), under the binos is a lensatic compass, under the sling is a kestrel, under the lrf there is a GPS

I have the top and bottom layers of foam.
Do you guys know where I can buy just the center one?
Is there anything laying around the typical household that will cut these pretty well?

lay out your stuff and outline it on the foam with chalk, then I used a electric carving knife, I actually bought one for this from wally martinez for 12 bucks or so

I buy foam from foam factory( http://www.thefoamfactory.com/closedcellfoam/polyethylene.html ) The last foam I got was 2.2lb CLOSED cell foam. I will never go back to open cell foam. Closed cell is much easier to work with and a much better finished product. If you buy enough, you can use different pieces of foam for different guns. Just use contact cement to glue the two bottom pieces together after you are done cutting. A hot wire knife is great for cutting as well as an electric meat/bread knife for straight cuts. Good luck.

Trying to find the difference between closed cell and open cell foam pads.
(What comes in Pelican cases, such as their 1750?)

Those look great guys, thanks for the pics. Super smart putting the rear back right under the stock like that. I should've known better, but I didn't even think to ask if the foam I ordered was open or closed cell. It's pretty stiff to be open cell, but I'm no expert. Time to email.

I've got to fit my 24" barreled 700, a 9" suppressor and some of the slip top ammo boxes in at least, but I know I can get those, the bag and the cleaning rod in no problem as well.

Thanks again for the help
