Sierra BTHP 174gr? What have others used for brass, powder, charge etc?

Curious what the loads chrono'd at as well. Thanks for the help.

Prvi is the best brass, in my experience. Try that bullet over 41.0 grains of Varget. That's my pet load. Should be moving around 2386 fps.

Edit to add: With Varget, I find an accuracy node at around 38 grains. However, it's pretty low in velocity and pressure. It drops off a cliff after that until you get back to about 41 grains, where it magically tightens right back up. I've seen this same thing in at least half a dozen No.4 rifles, including my T.

IMR or H 4064 for the 174 SMK and IMR or H4896 for the 150 Game King.

174g

150g

Depends on the range really. Any thing over 200 yards I go with the 174 SMK.

Good luck.

Don't overlook the Sierra 180gr. Game King Soft Point, either. Being a flat base bullet, most Enfields shoot very well with it and they can be easier to find (and cheaper) than the SMK, too.

Correction. That's the Pro Hunter, not Game King. Sorry.

Sierra 174 MK, HXP brass, 39.9 grains VV N140, Federal 210M primer, OAL 3.075, average velocity 2335 (80 degrees F)

Thank you all for the data info. It will be put to good use.

I remember awhile back I purchased some PMC .303 British ammo with 174gr. BTHP that shot very well. I kept all the brass but have yet to ever find that stuff again. Had to be about 10 years ago.

I've never used PMC .303 brass, so I would be curious as to your findings. I haven't seen any PMC ammo in several years. However, I reload pretty much everything now, so I'm not really looking, either. Some people have mixed results with Prvi ammo. I have a friend who is using it in a No.4, right now, and getting really good performance out of it. It may be worth trying out, then saving the brass. Otherwise, Graf's sells PPU (Prvi) brass for .303, also. It would be worth picking up, in my opinion. This caliber is really tough on brass and my experience with Remington, Imperial and one other that I can't seem to remember at the moment, was not as good as Prvi. You'll start to see the beginning stages of head separations in them after about two or three reloads. I have some Prvi that has over five, full sized reloads on them and they're still useable.

Look for Greek brass. It is the best, if you can find it. Next, try some cast bullets. Cast will fit your rifle better then any FMJ.

MY 2¢

Can you drive cast at 2600 to 2700 fps? How does it perform at or past 600 yards? What weight and do they track with the range drum? Keeping in mind these are not 100 yard target rifles and don't really lay down till 300 + yards.

Everyday if you use gas checks. Some of the moulds I use 316299 202GR, 314299, 312299 and a bunch from an Ozzy CBE CAST BULLET ENGINEERING - .310 Cadet , .303B , 577-450

Good moulds here:
.314 -.316, NOE Bullet Moulds

As for shooting past 600, every chance I get. Track with the drum? The ones Cpt Laidler or Wheaty rebuilt work fine (depends on the load). But some of my untouched No 32's are off (with everything). Cast brings a deep throat and worn lands back to life (316+). With 303B cast I shoot from 135 Gr to 220(+) Gr.

The plus for me is any mould for the 303B will work for my 7.62x54R. The mould for the 7.62x39 makes a light pill for close work and teaching the kids.

Go here and read around:
Cast Boolits

In the old days I was paper patching my 303. Then I found CBE moulds (20+years ago) an I haven't looked back. I'll save the FMJ for the 5.56mm and the 7.62mm. My old girls shoot better with cast.

i am using CCi primers, 42 grains of varget. PPU brass. and 174 grain HPBT. so far out to 500 yards with it using my 44 BSA T using a sarco replica 32 MKI scope and mount.

pretty much on point using the elevation drum. but either have to hold a little high or low at 400 yards or more.

Yea, most of the newer PMC anything I think is manufactured in Korea. Not saying it's all bad, the 5.56 stuff folks are reporting shoots pretty decent and clean. I think I have a few of the original boxes of the PMC .303 British laying around. I will check to see where this was made.

Joop, thank you for the tip, picked up 500 rounds of the Privi ammo. (I shoot all my Enfields a bunch). We definitely start reloading with this brass and work up a load.

Like I say, your results with their loaded ammo could be mixed. But, the brass is worth having and it will already be fire formed. Hope you can post some range reports in the near future!

Is anyone using reload 22 in the 303’s ??? I’m only asking because I have an overwhelming amount of it and I love it’s performance in my 300 win

I use 4895 in both the Enfield and Vickers and does a nice job replicating the original cordite loads.

Reloader 15 seems to be a good powder for .303, but nowhere can I find a single load for Alliant Reloder 22.

It’s a great powder for 300’win mag and 7mm mag. But suspect not a great choice for .303.

Look for HXP headstamp. The CMP sold a bit of .303 HXP.

They also sold about 30 million rounds of 30-06 HXP.

Good mil ammo.

You do know that this a 9 year old necrothread that was dug up by a guy with one plate since 2019 and supposedly more powder than he knows what to do with, right?

Sirhr

Nope didn't look at dates only needs.

Lot of this necro shit going on these days.
