Is there anything to do in Terminal 5 to keep me entertained? I normally fly through CDG and don't have a 9 hour layover.

Going to be there from 0515 to 1515 if any hider is in terminal 5 and wants to BS!

I don't get to pickem I just get told which one to be on! I have to say I am sitting in the BA lounge in Joburg and it is much nicer than AF! At least they fly me business, could be a lot worse.

Ok well I guess I will see.

Wife, two kids, house, work - I love it all but being stuck in an airport alone with access to a book and a pint sounds like vacation.

If you like Scotch, avoid the Duty Free shop at O.R. Tambo, Joburg. Waaay too expensive!

T5 is the best of the bunch. Full range of eateries, some bars, shopping, wifi etc etc. The BA lounge is OK, busy but good enough. Not sure that counts as being entertained but compared to some places... 9 hours though.

You could head into London. Jump the Heathrow Express and you are into Paddington Station in 15 minutes. Trains go every 15 minutes as well so no hanging around. At Paddington you can get straight onto a Tube or jump a cab to take you somewhere a bit more scenic. Nowhere takes very long from here. Tube is probably the best bet.

So you have time for breakfast in the city. Wander about, Lunch then back on the HEX and into T5. It is real easy. Security is a bit of a pain but what's new.

The nightmare of Heathrow for me is the NO SMOKING. One of the busiest airports in the WORLD, very few nationalities can automatically clear immigration and there isn't a single smoking lounge. I know all of the UK is supposed to be non-smoking indoors, but it always seemed to me that if I hadn't cleared immigration I wasn't officially IN the U.K. and should be allowed to smoke along with my over-priced pints somewhere in that airport.

Ditto the comment on Bisley, if you've never been. NRA (British) museum at Bisley is pretty nice, and the pub is right across the street. :)

I have a friend that flys to Joburg & C-town all the time; never understood why there is always a long layover in Heathrow...
