So I just got this Necchi BU industrial Italian sewing machine from the 30's capable of sewing leather and canvas with no problems, as well as delicate materials. It's a sweet piece of machinery! They really don't make machines like this anymore. Any kind of machine actually, it's really a marvel (I wonder how much it would cost to make 'em today!).

Anyway, I got it for various little projects, mostly to repair stuff around the house. Got tired of telling my wife we need to fix something and her reply being she only has a surger for fleece.

Two things I looked into are suppressor wraps and skid plates. They look easy enough to make. But I don't know how they make suppressor wraps (materials mostly) and I've never really used skid plates (we used to wrap 'em in burlap and rubber bands) so I'm not sure what works best, again, mostly materials.

Any other useful items or convenient items that anyone can think of? What about a drag bag? The type materials and thread needed, again, would be great if you could include that.

I may even be interested in doing some custom work for people for a good price too, as a little side business in the future. Who knows? Right now I'm just fishing for ideas that may make this thing more useful than just for fixing socks and sewing velcro on stuff.

    Thanks!

I was at Walmart, and noticed they sold zipper kits, and velcro for your own sewing projects. Made me want to make my own stock pack and shooting mat. The only problem is Iv'e never sewed anything lol. If you did something like that I'm curious to see how it comes out. Keep us updated

Wow dont see many guys this excited about sewing very often! its kinda cool. I think making rear shooting bags would be cool.

Sounds like it is ghillie suit time. Vented suit needs a good sewing machine.

Yeah, well, I wasn't too interested in it at first, but if you saw it you'd understand. It's like the 1930's Bugatti of sewing machines and I can appreciate anything almost 100 years old that runs almost silent.

Anyway, I have these plastic pellets a guy on here sent me to make some rear squeeze bags. I was gonna put 'em in a sock and tie it up like I used to do, then he showed me some leather bags he had made with 'em. Now we got this machine and it has me thinking... I mean, it's just sitting here. And it was kinda fun using it.

Shooting mat --yeah, I could use one of those badly and have access to plenty of puss pads and such. Thanks. Maybe a scope cover too.

Once I know how to make what I want, I'll order the materials and try it out. I'll post the results either way, if it's bad so you can laugh, if it's good so I can feel proud about myself. Win win either way I guess.

Nobody know what those suppressor wraps are made of? I guess nomex is part of it, but it sounds like some have some kind of insulation sewn inside (or it looks like it, they look thick).

Wife actually just dropped a few hundo on a new singer that can do leather and canvas etc. and I am actually excited about it. Soooooo being the supportive husband I am I went to the sewing class that came with the machine with her. We had an awesome instructor that got an amazing amount of knowledge in just 2 hours. I am pretty pumped about starting some new projects. I am going to be making a squeeze bag as well as some cover bags out of canvas or nylon for my sand bags because the duct tape just isnt cutting it. thats really it for now, but the cool thing about sewing and having a machine is we can make whatever we want.

Thanks for all the support and information, and I really do appreciate it!

    Here's a picture of it:

It looks like it's been better used than some for sale online do, but it is a lot older than some of those. As far as running, it's just a marvel, so slick. It may look dainty, but it's solid with no wasted space inside. These can be found online for as little as $50 to more than $500 depending on model and condition; I suspect the cheaper ones may have problems if you buy sight unseen. This one had a faulty tension knob, only thing wrong, but it completely disables the machine for all practical purposes. I fixed that in no time, now it's hot shit. I got this one for $150 with the table, lamp, foot pedal and a non-functional knee switch that's part of the table I need to repair because I have a lead foot on the foot pedal due to sciatic nerve damage. I can't feel it that well. It also came with the original box FULL of extra parts. It was very well taken care of (except that knob, he just didn't know how to fix it). It's really easy to operate and a hell of a lot quieter than my grandmother's old 50's or 60's model something or other (it was one of the best non-industrial one made at that time, and it couldn't sew canvas or leather --but she made all her family's clothes, and they looked good).

I'll check out that DIY site, that sounds like something I may be looking for, and I think I found the rockywoods site already, it was mentioned in some other thread when I searched. They (the one I looked at anyway) had all kinds of materials and in all kinds of colors.

The shooting mat is something I'm real interested in but I may wait for my rifle to build it. I'd like to make a padded drag bag that opens into a shooting mat and attaches to a backpack for the DTA HTI, since I'll be firing it almost exclusively in wilderness areas. In the meantime, I'll practice on the squeeze bags first likely, as they'll be pretty easy, followed by a few scope covers maybe for more practice, and then the suppressor wraps since their materials likely cost more (I'm guessing).

an idea for you is some sort of converter for the webbing on a tac ops drag bag outer pockets to a molle system

No, this is the one advertised to do leather, canvas, upholstery and such. I wouldn't have bought it if it didn't. I've already sewn much heavier stuff than you mention (just practice stitching, and it did amazing) and there are Youtube videos of people sewing everything from denim to canvas to leather. I'm told it'll sew anything you can fit in it and that you can adjust the thread tension for, but I'm told it doesn't do jersey well. Oh, when my wife was there to buy it and get the demo, they sewed together two pieces of thick saddle type leather with it, and this with the tension knob stuck about the middle (since fixed).

I have an idea for the suppressor wrap. So how about three layers, using Nomex thread. A special heavy duty nylon on the outside, then a layer (or 2) of nomex or aramid or kevlar, then a single layer of welding blanket, the 1800 degree carbon blanket linked to above. I think that would work, and it might even be overkill. I have my own design for attaching it, so I don't have to rip anyone off.

Gotta go stop the setter from trying to hump the cat.

i'd like to see some tactical multicam fleshlight covers,

I thought you might. I think you're in luck, it seems to me that they'll fit in the Izlid 1000 Tree-Go pouches. Attaches right to your gear, so you never have to leave without it.

So I just have to wait a bit and order some material and such... I have some designs to work with and I'd like to get it going by the end of the month. I'm gonna do the squeeze bags first, then maybe the skid plates followed by the suppressor wraps. Then I'll post the results.

Thanks for all the great ideas, I really appreciate it! Keep 'em coming if you think of anything else!

Once you start stuff it's hard to stop. You end up with stuff like this and it suddenly dawns on you that you can have anything your mind can come up with for a fraction of the cost of what name brand gear goes for.

Ok the logo on the patch... I gotta ask... is that "attracted to shit" or "shit magnet" or...??

Wow, that's pretty slick. I'll be glad to get some projects started already, I planned on doing it earlier than this but still haven't ordered the supplies yet. I hate getting a project lined up just to have other shit pile up in front of it, but that's the breaks living in Pac. NW and getting reading for the winter.

I really wished I'd listened to my grandmother when she offered to teach me to sew. I thought it was girly shit at the time. She really knew her shit too, made the whole family's clothes for a good while --and my uncle was a disco stud in his fitted Saturday Night Fever suits.

Really, really good looking work there hangingchads.
