Hello everyone. Just posted my first thread in the introductory section. I figured I'd post my second in here. I just purchased my first rifle since leaving the military. I picked up a Remington 700 Tactical 16.5" .308. A few hours ago I just ordered an SWFA SS 12x42 optic in mil/mil SWFA SS 12x42 Tactical Riflescope. I plan on using this weapon for long range target shooting, which I am fairly new to. I have plans on upgrading the stock when funds become more available. The only thing I have left to purchase are the rings and mount. I could really use some recommendations here. I'm not quite sure if I need medium rings and the type of mount. As far as my budget goes, it's fairly light after my recent two purchases. Forgot to mention I'm going to pick up a Harris bipod, there seem to be quite a few variants. Curious what you are all using on your .308's. Like I mentioned I'm new to long range shooting. Hope to hear from you guys and thanks in advance.

Burris tactical rings are pretty decent on a budget, and a weaver 20 moa base opticsplanet.com or midwayusa good sites. Be sure to lock tite the screws on the base. As always the more you spend the better off you are. I had a rem 700 varmint that I had cut down to 18 in and brake installed (from 26) and its a sweet short piece. For long range out to a 1000yds the velocity from 26 to 18in was about 300 fps less. I wouldn't use anything other than match grade ammo. Not sure if you hand load but you may want to keep your bullet weights down to 155 grainers with high BC and high velocity. I use the sierra 155hpbt palma match bullets .504 BC at about 2936fps out of a 26in barrel 2630 out of a 18in. Not sure what factory ammo you can come by right now shelves are kinda bare for match ammo. Palmetto state armory has federal gold medal match 168gr for 22.99 abox right now. Not sure how far you consider long range but that probably wont work at 1000yds out of that gun. Hornady website has a Ballistic calculator that works pretty darn good. I started about 4 years ago and I wish I had found this website to help me out. Until I did it was learn as you go

I'm new here as we'll and recently picked up a 700 tac 20" barrel 308 with the same swfa 12x42 fixed scope. I have TPS medium rings and a 20moa base and it fits good. I've read the low rings work but they weren't in stock at the time. I also picked up a McMillan htg and timney trigger. It's a pretty nice setup so far, I'm happy with it.

Interested to see how that 16.5" shoots. As I'm sitting here playing with my 16.5".... Noveske.

As for rings and base on a budget I would say either Weaver or Burris as suggested. There is also a thread over in the optic section that can tell you how to measure out your rings and everything for a good fit.

Why would you really need a 20 MOA base when using a SWFA SS? It dials up so far you really wouldn't need it... I could see maybe a magnum of sometype but not a 308

Especially running a 16.5" Barrel your probably not going to be stretching the limits of the round

16.5" barrel = less velocity than 24" = more moa needed for long range, better to have it and not need it

Thank you for all the replies. I decided to go over my budget a bit and have two sets of mounts and rings picked out. I cant decide on which one. I have been trying to figure out the difference between one piece and a 2 piece mounts and that seems to be a big argument on quite a few forums. Curious what you guys think. Right now in my cart I have NF 30mm low rings, and NF 2 piece 20MOA short action mount. And the second choice was Seekins 30mm low rings, and Seekins 1 piece 20MOA short action mount, 6-48. The scope being mounted is the SWFA SS12X42 mil-quad, OBJ Bell Diameter 49.5mm / 1.949". I have a bunch more questions but those will come after I hit the range. Thank again for the replies and sorry if these questions have been asked numerous times. I am new to this.

FTC, those McMillan stocks are nice. That's my next project and don't know where to begin. Soon enough.

with low rings and/or scope that sits low on a rifle, the 2 piece mounts work well, it makes i easier to load rounds and clear jams & brass if they don't eject

Just ordered the NF 2 piece 20 MOA. Going to pick up the 30mm lows hopefully next week. Could have went cheaper but I figured why the hell not, quality parts.
