I am looking to buy a first time center fire rifle. The Remington 700 VTR 223 catches my eye. Is this a good starter rifle re: accuracy and barrel life? Most of my shooting will be from 100 - 300 yds. Low recoil is necessary due to shoulder problems. I already have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope for it. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks !

I had a vtr and it shot fine but knowing what I do now I would just go the sps route and save a few bucks

Just pick up a SPS tactical (varmint contour barrel - factory), a 700 LTR, or the 700 varmint in .223 if that is the caliber you want. For a bit more money the 700 5R (20" or 24") would be damn nice and serve you a long time in shooting potential. I would stay away from the VTR of any variety; too many mixed reviews and the .308 I shot was not very consistent.

Good luck and let us know where you end up...

My VTR is in 308 and I consistently shoot 1/2" groups with it on a good day. I don't really have any problems with flyers or anything like that as long as the ammo is good obviously. As for a starter rifle an SPS/SPS TACTICAL is probably the best option. I like the potential of experimentation with muzzle devices on the AAC-SD also. I have heard that the muzzle break on the 223 VTR creates a inconsistency with that rifle and caliber but I've only run into two or three of those accounts. My friend had that problem so he had the brake cut off and he was shooting sub 1/2" groups.
