My God! Its been a while since I've been on here....I tried to look around to figure out what's new but didn't see anything that helped. For some reason the server wouldn't recognise my password so I had to reset it, but hey I got back in. I noticed that post counts partially reset? Went from 5,000 to 600? Doesn't matter, just one of the things I noticed. Also noticed all of my saved PM's are gone which really sucks. So what else is new in the last 2 years or so?

The changes you've noted are, by far, the most tolerable. Wait 'til you meet the new neighbors!

Some notable changes other than what you mentioned.

Search engine is way less efficient than the old one.
Nice new tab up top for whats new, kinda handy.
You can customize how the SH background looks in your settings, be sure to look over all your settings btw.
Shout box is now at the bottom of the page and I rarely ever see it, Kind of miss it on the side bar.

Still a great bunch of people though !

Graham, good to see your still around. Rolex, wi50, ASM1, Rob01 and a few of the other ol' timers still around??

Also, is there a way to recover old PM's?
My friends list had been wiped too, having a hell of a time remembering screen names....there was an older gentleman, Greg I believe, he used to make knives and had his screen avatar as a cartoon knife stuck into a chopping block, never changed his avatar....any ideas on his screen name? He posted alot...

Eh, I think it has less to do with being PC or having thin skin but has more to do with political posts going off the charts to crazyland in recent years and just feeding the sterotype that we're all a bunch of paranoid, theocratic, racist idiots (oh they're still here, but they're not allowed to blather as much as before) and just get back to the focus of shooting.

Dogtown, I'd love to agree with you.

Thing of it is, though... that we all (as humans) have more than one interest, and more than one thought, and more than one topic on our minds at pretty much any given time. This place USED to be the "meetingplace of the minds" to which (most) similar-minded folks could just get along. Not unlike sitting in a bar over a beer/drink.

And yes, at any bar, there was always some idiots who went too far. They were dealt with, the mops were brought out, and we went back to our business.

With the curtailing of so many different topics, as well as the 'overwatch' required/applied to (same) then what is left is a somewhat "soccer-mom quilting-bee" at the local coffee-house. To which all things quilting shall be discussed, and anything other than quilting shall be dealt with.

This is Frank's House, and I get that. Problem for us all though, is that so many who were here for the "camaraderie" and "ambiance" have gone to other places where they can "say their mind" about whatever on their mind.

And, as always, it is up to us to police ourselves, as well as "make this place what it is".... so we're back to the GIGO concept and it is ours to change. Right?

Or am I off the path? That's the way I see it, anyways.

How the Hide has changed

I've noticed an increase in the amount of new people who post first, and think afterward if at all.

And a correlation between the stupidity of the post and the amount of bitching and whining they do when someone shows them to be full of shit.

Wow. LR how are you? It's been a while. Rob01... that's a name I haven't seen in a while, too. I don't come 'round here much anymore. As Switchblade said, if I may paraphrase, it's way too touchy feely, and a lot of the FNG's repost the same age-old questions. Mebbe I'm getting short-tempered; in their defense the search engine isn't nearly as good as it was.

At least you got back in; I was gone so long I either forgot my login or it was deleted, so I hadda start over. Lots of guys are gone now. It's a different crowd. Enjoy your visit.

I think they cut post counts down to reflect whatever the amount of posts you made that were actually helpful/knowledgeable.

:)

But if you were over, say, 20k posts, you were a lost cause anyways.

LOL! I don't really have 20K posts, that's an outside (as opposed to an inside) joke.

One thing that hasn't changed is that the 50 Caliber posts still bring out of the woodwork all the newby 'experts'. What has changed is that they now own the rifle.

I have little patience these days for keyboard commandos so I rarely post anymore. Just try to read so I don't have to interact with certain people around here. Sad, because I use to really enjoy chatting with a lot of the guys on here. Most of those old timers have moved on though. Good to see a couple old names on here. Cheers

Good to see you back LR. This place has changed quite a bit in the last few years and you won't see a lot of the old fun stuff going on. For better or worst it is what it is but the new generation is very thin skinned. Please, thank you, and what is the best bad ass scope for $200 seems to be the norm.

The hide was near perfection before, but now it just sucks. It will take YEARS of re-posting to acquire the information that was once available on these boards via the google custom search engine. Now I can hardly find out the best sniper scope for my m700 sps tac .308.

That is because you are too fucking stupid to realize there is a custom search available and 3/4 of the information is still here.

But then again, it's the internet you have to expect a certain amount of stupid even when the information is staring them in the face.

Then explain to me Frank why I can't find that 3/4 of the information that I had access to three years go but as of three days ago I didn't? And also, explain to me why there isn't a sticky in ever sub-forum giving us a link to this new custom search engine? I'm not trying to be an ass but I am simply saying that I much preferred the previous layout and operation better.

There is a thread detailing it in the site information section.

If the place sucks, go somewhere else, you certainly won't be missed and I'd be happy to help point the way.

information has never been endless and we have always pruned information off the site. It takes up space, crowds the server and the questions are circular, they constantly get repeated. Since the beginning we have deleted posts knowing the question and answer will come up again.

Thanks for the direction towards that thread. That was the only thing the new format is missing imho

Oh please don't throw out the information in the Reloading section....

There is a priceless resource in that section. I hope the old school guys keep providing information and that it is never lost. I also hope that they don't ever leave the 'Hide.

The Bear Pit, not so much.....

ive only been on the site for the last couple of years or so, but I have witnessed some complete sputum heads and their bullying behavior run peeps off. I for one, like the "new attitude" of not tolerating the bullying behavior of internet commandos. I have had many great online conversations here, and have been schooled myself about posting stupid questions. but many of the other boards where rude egomaniacs rule the site instead of the moderaters, have completely turned me off to that site.

How the Hide has changed

I propose a new rule:

The established members have to check with all the new members before posting any reply, to make sure no one's feelings would be inadvertently hurt.

If anyone with more than 500 posts fails to do that, and someone complains, then the accused offending party has to buy fabric softener for the complainant.

Frank, I could even draft that rule for you. No charge.

LOL! (....To those of you that think this is a good idea, I am only joking.)

Red this thread and agree with the comments about the change. However, I could care less. My post started over when the change happened. I didn't have many to begin with because I READ.....ALOT! I appreciate the wealth of information. Always enjoyed Lowlights, Grahams, Switchblades comments etc. I think if most folks would just SEARCH & READ they would acquire 5 times more information than the question they needed answered to begin with. Been the case for me anyways. Within 1 year I can now reload(Precision reload) with the best of them and have acquired the "right" tools(weapons etc) to fit what I do in the field. All this without WASTING $$$$ buying the wrong stuff first and having to learn from mistakes!

I would highly appreciate it if the "old timers" would please keep posting their advice and methods as I believe there may be those just like myself on here that are greatly benefiting. The more that know how to shoot well the better. We will need it.

"It rubs it on it's skin, or it gets the hose again....."

Just a simple follow-up to your post, Graham. Good job, and the final outcome here is going to be interesting and profound. It is what we make of it, right? (within certain parameters, of course)

What pisses me off, is how many people want to be handed the information.

I posted the updated Google Search on 3/16 as well there are how many posts about "lost post count" (which the posts are not lost, the number is just not being counted by this system) Still every week I get emails and PMs about the post count, can I sell something etc. People will even reference the new rules, and still ask questions about it.

Then you have guys coming on claiming it "sucks" and how long they have been a member and how much better the other site was, never once acknowledging:

1. The site actually runs and is not being bogged down by old unsupported software

2. Spam threads have been kept to a minimum

3. The new Site Search does actually work, just not as well on the "old information"

4. Hacks are not occurring because this software is actually supported and up to date.

No they don't like the change, because it simply requires them to spend 10 minutes re-learning the software and nobody is holding their hand doing it. They don't like it because now they have to set up their accounts, instead of us doing it. Like when they want to change their user name, they have to do it, even though they would rather we do it. It's not so much about inconvenience but about doing anything at all. If you spend 5 minutes in the Site Information section, ya you might have to scroll down, then spend another 5 minutes in your general settings and profile, you'd learn that this software is actually much more robust than UBB even was. But that would be like work, require an actual effort.

I am sure 24 hours from now, I will have 4 more emails about their post count, selling their junk, or the private messages. All stuff that has been answered over and over.

How the Hide has changed

When students figure something out for themselves, with my help, they learn it better and can do it without me next time.

Some people here want to post, but not to have a discussion and work something out together, just to see their words appear on the screen.

So when I challenge them: Ask them questions and suggest that they think and do the mental math, they take offense, call me condescending, and shut down or lash out.

That's an attitude issue - theirs as well as mine - but I'm not here to cater to people whom, if at first they don't succeed, give up and blame someone else for not getting handed what they want from someone they don't know.

There are no prizes in the race to call yourself a victim.

Still my favorite site on the net! I have received a lifetime of info here and made some great friends. There are many awesome people here, one just has to show the earned respect that the Tier 1 OP's deserve and ask questions in the right way. I for one no longer have to take my laptop and tablets in for expensive repairs when hackers do their damage. Whenever I ask a question that someone gets derogatory remarks, I do not respond to them at all---sooner or later a real OP will PM me the correct info or a link. I do read at least 10 X as much as I post. I learned on previous websites about those with "knowledge" but no experience. Here I am able to see who won the last match and get his advice on equipment etc. There is so much experience here, one just has to learn how to extract it! I have never been ripped off here by any vendor---quite the opposite; they go to all ends not just to fix a problem, they also make sure you are satisfied. Buying from HIDE vendors and reputable OP's will get you the real deal, not any knock-off products that I have a box of to remind me when I read a classified with an intriguing price by un-proven subscribers.

I read more than I post here anymore, mainly because I don't want to give out bad info unintentionally (I'm still new to precision shooting.) This website is filled with great information and has had a significant impact on my shooting. As to the website change over; I agree with lowlight, the new features aren't difficult to learn, but you do need to take the 3 minutes to learn them.

As to discussions, yeah it can get annoying seeing the same threads over and over, but what of it? You're getting upset about an accumulation of bytes and pixels that don't form exactly how you want them to? Get off your 'there's no content here' horse and help a new shooter out. For alot of these new shooters buying a basic Rem700 and SWFA SS will be the most they've ever spent on any firearm, so why not give them a nod and tell them it should work out fine. Hell, that might have been the nudge they needed to make that purchase and get into the sport.

There's still tons of good info here, you just have to look for it, and come on Frank, we don't call you names, this is still THE place for all of us to come, in most cases, daily, even if we don't post. I do miss the 2nd Amendment section but I understand why you deleted it.

And yes I'm still pissed about losing 500 posts! ha ha

Never understood those so upset about their post count. I lost 2000 and could careless. Last time I checked my count wasn't connected to my dick size, so I'll get by. If Frank some how figures out a way to do that, then I might get fired up.

I'm a new guy, I have some experience and I am shooter this is my go to on the web after Drudge. I am still catching up on reading stuff and finding my way around, I plan on being one of the old guys that complains in a couple of years about change. Right now this is a pretty amazed at all the info and some of the stupidity.

I suspect that few here are any less (current-)computer literate than I, but simply putting one's head down and forging onward seems to work well enough. Besides, I don't need the site to spoon feed me everything; I figure If I can't find something, I was never meant to...

At last estimate, my post count comes up about 22,500 short. Meh...

No politics, not my favorite development; mainly because I really don't go many other places on the 'Net, and it was convenient to get my news on the 2nd Amendment stuff all here in one place. I miss that, but I can live with things as they are here. I figure the folks who have a real association with Sniper-oriented issues get their paychecks from folks with thinner skins than me or maybe than Frank; and I will gladly give up some controversy so as not to have them need to 'live in interesting times'. There's more at stake here for some pretty fine people than just sore sensibilities. If you forget that, or just don't giveafarg, I'll be more than glad to assist Frank in helping you find the door here.

Greg

I can't claim to be a part of the early days but I posted and participated quite a bit over the years and learned a tremendous amount of info that would have taken me a lifetime to learn on my own. I still stop by regularly but the small group dynamic has changed and I don't jump in as much these days.

I have been around since 2001, Frank sent me instructions (thank you) on how to log in with my original board moniker, I chose to use one of my schill accounts.

As for change and thin skin - here is another spin: This board has been around for @13 yrs now. You are interacting with people of varying ages, backgrounds, experience and location. The mood of the nation and the world has changed A LOT in that same time period. Take stock - are you really that 'likable' in your own community? Are you as adept as you think you are in expressing yourself via the written word? Short version - somewhere out there, everyone thinks YOU are a dickhead. This is the net - there is bound to be a reasonable population of them here, esp if they go back and read the history of some people's posts (one can certainly glean an insight into another's personality in so doing).

Also - if your an old head and you find yourself reading more and posting less - that's normal. It is called maturing. You've grown weary of the 'how to do MIL math', you've posted pics of your stick, groups, cars, (now ex) nekkid wife, given us your reloading secrets, as well as your opinions on most everything else. Then got tired of watching the next crop folks do all of that and more in your wake - esp if it ran counter to your opinions. Pretty normal. Dude.

There are still a lot of good folks here. As we all have said many times - Frank's house, Frank's rules, and you're free bail at any time. In general I like the changes, it puts the focus back on shooting. For those that are really interested in shooting, the more the site polices itself to stay on track, the more likely it is that it will be populated by even more serious shooters. Just a thought.

I started lurking here about 2005. I think the biggest change is it is not the wild west it used to be with people getting attacked constantly. Some of the biggest offenders seem to be gone. I have no idea if they left voluntarily or were shown the door. Insults still happen, though sometimes people are more clever about about being derogatory in an unprovoked fashion. It cracks me up when the instigator gets a smack back and then complains about it. And, of course, there are still people who are over the top about it and downright disruptive. Just fewer than in "the good old days". And, unsurprisingly, many don't see themselves the way others do. Not much different than real life off the net.

I'm not sure if I'm remembering this correctly so I could be way off base on this, but it seems that there are more people posting these days who are really new to shooting. When I started posting here I was new to precision long range shooting -- but had won money and trophies as a competitive trap shooter and been a shooter in general since the early 1970s. Now it seems there are many who are buying their first guns -- of any type. In the mid-2000s I seem to remember more experienced shooters here. Now more questions than answers. If this is part of his point, I think Graham may be right that there are more people spouting off based on things they've read than things they've done. Then again, the rose we remember and the thorns we forget, so maybe I'm off base on this one.

I don't think I ever participated in the political arguments so I shouldn't be in a position to say I miss them. But given the state of things these days I think I probably would have started posting in threads like that if they were still around. Frank, I've been here long enough to know you don't like anyone telling you how to run your site, but there's a car forum I've posted on that wanted to eliminate political posts due to people complaining they didn't like coming across those threads and getting upset. But there were so many people that still wanted them the site ended up making a pay-to-play subsection where it was more anything goes. But you had to pay a fee to get access to "The Clubhouse". So it was hard to take complaints seriously when people had gone out of their way to pay money to read stuff that pissed them off. Just a thought that might put more coin in your pocket and shut up the disgruntled. If you're not interested, no big deal. I'm not complaining, just throwing out an idea I saw implemented elsewhere.

As far as the programming changes to the site I don't have any complaints. In fact, I've been rather baffled as to what the fuss was about. My Yahoo email has made more annoying changes that have required more effort on my part to adapt to. It's the internet; it evolves. Adapt or fall behind.

And not long ago a commercial poster said anyone with more than a thousand posts (excluding ownership and employees) should be deemed an incompetent -- so shouldn't some folks be happy they lost part of their post count?

As far as marksmanship and shooting in general are concerned...there are folks coming here that don't know whether they're playing with their peters or strapping a razor!!

I agree with Sharpsman, even a few years ago (I joined in 2010) you could almost be assured that when someone posted some advice he knew what he was talking about. Now you have every guy and and his brother posting like they've been shooting for 20 years, just can't rely on info like you used to...
