I am planning on getting a 10x, 16x or 20x for my new .308 my question is for roughly 100-600 is either a 10x not enough if if can shoot out to 600 or is a 20x to much for 100-300 yard shooting. Also is the clarity of the 20x not as good as the 10 or 16

The SWFA's have good glass at their price point but IMO not good enough glass for a 20x scope, it's pretty dim. I've got one I only use for load development occasionally and even that fatigues my eye pretty bad. It has a narrow field of view and exit pupil as well. For your shooting the 10x is more than sufficient, even the 6x would be sufficient. If you want a little more step up to the 12X. I have one of those too and really like it, it's bright enough, has a generous eye box, and I haven't experienced any problems with mirage either like I have with the 16x and 20x.

I have the 16x on my rem700 .308 i shoot out to 1000yards with it. I see no reason not to buy another SWFA optic. I am planning on doing a .223 build this winter for the wife. I will be ordering a 12x for her with seekins rings and base.

If your range is out to 600 then I'd suggest the 10-12x, they have a little better quality view than the 16x I have the 16 for my .260, it's a great scope up to about 900-1000 yards, then the picture starts to get really dark going into shadows.... there is a glare if you're pointing in a direction towards the sun, it was 11am at the time where it was almost overhead... but still had glare... Mine tracks like a dream... I'm going to look into a sunshade or killflash for it to try to deal with glare

Thanks guys, I have a 10x I'm planning on using for my .223 bolt gun and can't decide if I want another 10 for my .308 or wait and get a 12 if I can find a good deal on one

I've shot with the 10x before and it's nice. A friend who has the 10 and 20 says the glass is far better on the 10. AFIW, he shoots a mile repetively on a 308 with either.

Great scopes for the price and 16X would be plenty to shoot 1000 yards or more, but with my 65 year old eyes, I got the 20X and only use it on my Savage 22LR for practice between 100-300 yards. I have found it to be plenty bright, but I live in Arizona and we usually have nice bright days. More power for me just makes it easier for me to see the hits! Use more expensive scopes on my high caliber LR rifles to shoot distance and prefer 20-25X on those, but also love my March FX 5-40X 56mm-don't need spotting scope!

You could get the 6x and be fine at 600 yards. It's all a matter of what you want to do. I would split the difference and get the 12x. I have a 16x on a 22 rifle. I chose the 16x specifically for that rifle use it solely for target.

I would stay with the 10X SS. There are other factors. Do you have MILDOTS? Or any mil type ranging reticle? I too had a 20X SS, but I traded it back in for a 10X. I am used to hold overs for my 10x going back to my Army days. Milling is not a factor with me as I pretty much memorized ranges. If you use 20 X, you have to double everything, range, hold overs, etc. It is good that you have various calibers, and that is what makes shooting fun. But I am a believer, at least in the vernacular of why everyone is on this web forum, that you are training as much as you are having fun shooting. To use a scope correctly and in real world is all about muscle memory. So keeping the same power on your scopes, unless you are going .50 cal or .338 Lap, is a no brainer. Just my 2 cents. Stay with the 10X.

I just got the 12x and so far I like it even though I haven't shot with it yet. Get the 10x or 12x. 10x should be a bit brighter with more forgiving eye box. Whatever you do don't listen to russ10x as everything he said is completely wrong.

I have two of the 10X with side focus. I love them. I can shoot out to 800 easy. THE ONLY FACTOR here that I will truly say is it all depends on the size of your target!!!!!

If you are wanting to shoot a little 1 inch circle target... at about 600 yards that 1 inch target it hard to see with a 10X. Especially with any mirage. If you are shooting 6 inch targets, well I could be able to see it out to 1000 yards fine to take a shot. Magnification does not mean accuracy.

say you have a 5x power scope and you put the cross hairs on your target.... the POA is still the same and the POA would be at 25X power.

I guess what I am saying is it all falls into your target size... For me with the SWFA 10X a 4 inch circle target at 750 yards is very small in the scope. But I am the aim small miss small mentality person.

I'd go with the 16X SWFA SS.
Its my all around favorite budget scope, I've ran them side by side with my old benchmark Leupy MK4 16X and I never felt lacking with the SS.....
