The guy I bought my rifle from sent me a recipe calling for RE15. After calling the world over and not being able to find any I was about to give up on being able to reload. Sitting here tonight I was reading over the original paperwork that came with the rifle and the guy that built it says he recommends H4895.

So I guess my question would be does anyone here use H4895, and what do you think about it? I'm going to call the local reloading guy here in town in the morning and see if he can get any.

H4895 is a great powder for a .308.

I would rate Varget, H4895 and IMR 4064 as my top three choices.

The H part of H4895 indicates that it is a extreme line series powder made by Hogdon. This means it is temp stable, a common complaint of RE15 powder.

Work up a load, I have found good velocity with a accuracy.

Lastly, its probably the most versatile powder out there. It works well in a lot of applications

It's my "go to" powder for my 18.5" Criterion barreled LR308. With 175 SMK, I'm getting 2570 FPS at the muzzle and it's stupid accurate...easily and consistently between 1 and .5 MOA 5-shot groups. It's a great powder for .308. My brother's custom bolt action with a Krieger 24" barrel likes 42.7 grains under the SMK 175 grain bullet. My gas gun likes 42.3 grains. Burns clean also.

Be careful...there are 2 "4895's"...IMR 4895 and H4895. They are both owned by the same parent company, but they are slightly different powders and are not interchangeable. It's my understanding that IMR 4895 is good for .308 also, but I have no experience with it.

Awesome powder. I use it for my 223 and varget for my 308. Just work your data up. Also you will need to re OCW/ladder what ever you do to get the node. It's a different powder so different performance.

In the early days of the .308, (7.62x51); the saying was "if it don't shoot with 4895 (IMR4895) it probably won't shoot". We have come a long way, but that's a great place to start. These days, the reloader has a great selection of powders to choose from.

H4895 works great in a 308 with 175 and under bullets. Its burn rate is pretty close to re12. In short barreled 308s it helps get back some speed lost by cutting down the barrel. I use it in 223w/ 50 vmax, 243w/55 gr bkings, and 6 br w/105 hybrids . In the br i am getting2925 fps with es of 9 and sd in the 2-3 range. It funny as hell when someone laughs at the little br rd and then shits when they see it stack em on steel at 1200. When my current stash of varget is out for the 308 it will be switched over to H4895 . I got a load for that 24" rifle that throws 155 Palmas@2930, my varget load only runs 2850, but matches accuracy with the H4895.

I've worked up loads with Varget, IMR 4064, RE-15, and H4895. All of them produced acceptable results - typically .6-1MOA. H4895 had the hyper accurate loads where I was shooting 1-inch groups at 200 yards over and over.

I've been using RE-15 for the last year because I couldn't find H4895 but finally ordered another 8lb can of it. My accuracy load was 40.5gr H4895 and a 175gr Matchking with a 210M primer.
