Looks like Ruger has gotten into the .308/7.62x51mm AR market. I like the fact that it comes from the factory with: 3 PMags, 3 Rail Cover, 2 Rails, Front & Rear folding sights, Soft carry case, and a front sight tool - pretty much a complete package.

Thoughts:confused:

It's a Matrix Aero upper and lower and Ruger piston, I figure these will be solid guns for 1600 or so street price. Plus if you don't like the piston you can always convert it back to DI.

Always good to see another large-frame AR hit the market (even if it IS a Ruger)!! ;)

Joking aside...the proof will be in the pudding. I'll be interested to see some reputable reports as to not only the accuracy of this new offering, but also how the operating system performs both in terms of their piston setup and the 4pos gas system setup. Hopefully, depending on their sales numbers and interest overall in the platform, they'll also consider some additional configs/bbls/etc. to the basic 16.1" carbine.

I'm definitely interested in it, as I am almost done building my AR, and would like to get into a .308 next. Waiting to see what some of you guys have to say about it.

Finally a ruger that weighs more than the SR556

You are not kidding, I have one and like it but it is a heavy mother, but I will say that my Seekins with Noveske barrel weighs pretty much the same. Other than the weight I am not sure there are any other valid complaints on the SR556.

I had a SR-556e built up with bipod and optic. It shoot very well and never had an operational glitch. I'm curious to see some range reports.

Counting my chickens before they hatch, but I will hold out for an 18"-20" version.

+1

20 for me would be ideal, but honestly there aren't many places here were I'd have to stretch a shot over 500-600 yards and 16" sure would be nicer to hork around. This is really tempting, as soon as I see a few range tests.

Doesn't look bad to me although Ruger's past bullshit about mags and assault weapons still kind of bugs me.

I can't be authoritative because I was still in high school when this happened and not in congress, but this is about when I started getting into debate/politics. As I recall, Bill Ruger said that rather than a weapon ban, they should concentrate on the magazines, since
a) they would never logistically be able to pull off a weapons ban, ever, and
b) I make guns for a living and so do Colt, S&W, and many other respected American brands and we like making money, and
c) its legally and morally more just to have a categorical law (ex; ANY mag above x rounds) that can be enacted or repealed with a single amendment than to pick and chose the guns to ban.

Could be off a little, but I seem to remember just about every gun manufacturer capitulating in some way. Colt, Remington, and S&W have all earned the ire, too. Sometimes they just have to scramble to survive, and be happy they only lost 5 yards.

Regardless, Bill Ruger has gone on to other things and Ruger has been sticking with the whole business thing lately.

Like the look of the Ruger308, but HATE those silly looking flash hiders. The first thing to be changed, otherwise a nice piece.

Its good that Ruger entered the market at this price point for the "medium priced" piston driven 7.62 AR market. I purchased a SIG 716 in the 2 grand range and the next closest rifle was an OBR or LMT , both in the 3 grand+ range. My thoughts are that with the SR 762's lower price you can spend more on mounts, glass, mags, ammo etc..... (spouse permitting of course ;)).....Look forward to range reports...

If you a stuck on a ruger, then get it. But the CMMG is by far a better deal even when you add the 3 PMAgs. A SSA and superior compensator on the CMMG plus the fact that everyone and their mother is making Keymod accessories which I think beats those proprietary rails and attachments that the ruger has.

If you are interested in piston systems, you can just buy an upper from someone like PWS that makes an incredibly soft shooting and reliable piston system. I don't think you can switch out your upper with your ruger.
