I'm relatively new to long range precision shooting. I want to find out what type of hardware (PDA, smart phone, tablet, etc) will run good ballistic software. I've read a lot on this forum about software, but am not clear on which hardware is required for specific software. For wxample, if a s/w program requires Android, will it run on the highly customized version of Android used by the Kindle Fire? Any help would be appreciated. I am also on a budget, so I am likely initially to select something like Shooter to get started. Thanks.

Android apps will run on android devices but may be difficult to get loaded. There is also the issue of how practical the use of a kindle fire is at the range. On the cheap buy an old android phone and use that for shooter or applied ballistics. If you want really good software field firing solutions is regarded as the best and you are looking at around a grand at least to get it up and running. So there you go.

JBM ballistics is free and you can bring it to the range by printing the data and not worry about breaking your iPhone.

You can buy an old ipod and download any of the more common shooting apps like Ballistic AE, istrelok, shooter, etc. If you already own a PDA with windows mobile, you can load some of the higher end programs on it such as Field firing solutions, Coldbore or Horus Atrag but they will cost more than an "app" but you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the information. I did precisely what LawnMM suggested, downloading JBM to my PC to print data to take to the range. The download was riddled with viruses and malware, some of which was very challenging to get rid of. Maybe I'll try it again and find out I did something wrong. Thanks for the recommendations.

I've got an android phone I got on ebay. I just run it without service. I've got strelok+ & have tried shooter. I'm considering just getting the Applied Ballistics app for it now.
