I am a long time lurker. This week I was lucky enough to trade for a BNIB GAP-10 in .308. Needless to say I am ecstatic. However I have a Dilema on my hands. This is my first long range rifle. I had planned on mounting my 2.5-10x56 Swarovski on the rifle. I am now starting to have second thoughts. Here is the deal. I am by no means a wealthy man. This rifle will be my plinker, target puncher, and shtf gun all in one. I know that is not ideal or practical but those are the facts. Pretty much everything else I own is either a .22 or HK handgun. Should I sale my Swaro and my 5.56 ammo stash which I have no use for now and get a Nightforce or should I get an illuminated reticle and turrets installed on the Swaro? I am back and forth on this by the hour for days now. Talk some sense into me please. I appreciate the help. I look forward to learning and posting on here a lot more.

Well certainly if you have no further use for the 5.56 ammo and you don't see yourself picking up another rifle in that caliber in the near future...then that's a no brainer.

As for the optic...that's a very personal decision. For me, I'd sell of the Swaro and hop on a NF if the model/reticle preferred in a heartbeat rather than monkeying around with having the Swaro "upgraded" or otherwise "modified" to more your liking. Not to take away from the Swaro as they are decent optics, but the NF is all around a better optic, better selection of reticles, with better features, etc. Additionally, unless you just want one of the NF compact optics, you'll be able to step up in max power to either 15x or 22x on the top end and will allow you to get far more out of your new GAP-10 than the Swaro ever could. ;)

Congrats on your acquisition. Be prepared in the future to get additional GAP rifles to add to the safe!! ;)

Awesome rifle.

You have the right idea tryong to get in on the PR LT scope deal. The non matching ret/yurrets arent ideal but at that price it doesnt matter.

Good luck getting set up.What do you have for 5.56 ammo I may want some plinking fodder.

970 rds of Independence 55gr BNIB and 300 and something rounds of Hornady Steel Match 75gr Bthp on stripper clips. Also 50rds of Finochi 40gr vmax BNIB.

I appreciate all the comments and the two pms. Keep them coming. Do you think an illuminated reticle is a must?

Buy the Nightforce and you will never look back. They can be found here used for good
price if you are willing to watch the boards. If for some reason the NF did not suit you,
you can always resell it easily.

Nice choice on your GA!

I agree that a higher power scope will let you get a lot more out of your GAP-10. A solid FFP Nightforce will probably do nicely. If you plan on shooting precision out to decent ranges, invest in the glass, even if it's painful. You have the gun, but the glass is the critical enabler. Enjoy your GAP, I've got about 9 long months until mine comes in :)

I am by no means a wealthy man either but several on hear have offered one piece of invaluable advice, buy once cry once. I did and went with a NF 5.5x22 and it is just what I wanted in a rifle/scope combo, happy as a clam! there are plenty of NF to found in the Optics for sale section and if you want new there are some great vendors around here that give discounts to hide members. I picked mine up at Sportoptics.com from Scott and he took good care of me as a hide member. Good luck, you are gonna love the shit out of that rifle. Now you just have to reload to fuel that addiction LOL.

Ok I am ready to stop banging my head against the wall. I don't have the money for the group buy right now. I am going to start scraping the cash together for the Nightforce I know I want deep down. I appreciate the help. You guys gave it to me straight that is what I needed.

Mount the Swaro and shoot it. Enjoy what you have.

well what do you think your scope is worth if you sell it? Are you putting any extra money into a new scope? What do you think other then a lit reticle do you think you need over your current scope?

The NXS 3.5-15x FFP, but that will run you around $2400. You can get the 5.5-22x SFP for about $2k, or you can get the ATACR which is 5-25x SFP, but it has the best glass out of all of those.

I would like to have the lit reticle and turrets. It is a hunting scope an while it is great it is not ideal. The reticle is a wide duplex it just seems like it doesnt fit the rifle I guess. Some higher magnification would also be great. The only things I love about the Swaro is the clarity and weight.

Clarity of thought, true wisdom commited to this post.

Regret is forever and it can be expensive.

I want to thank everyone again for the input. I have always been a handgun guy. This site has already been a big help in getting into the precision rifle scene. I am digging it.

Nice stick dude. Do it right and glass it up well. Buy once, cry once. Kind of like putting 20K in bike between your legs, and 100 on your head.
