Death from home-made ghillie

!!!!! Estrada may have accidentally started the fire while trying to light a cigarette. -- The costume apparently was made of burlap sacks and straw

I've said this in a few 'Look at my new ghillii suit' threads;

- you will put an ungodly amount of hours into your first one and it will either look like total shit or you will look like a guy in a ghillee suit
- it will weight 50+ pounds when wet and will make you look like a guy wearing a wet ghillee suit
- it will smell like dogshit and will give your position away due to smell and it will not be allowed in the house
- it will catch fire and kill you
- it will get snagged on EVERYTHING you try to walk/crawl past
- it will normally be outdone by someone who knows how to simply use the terrain

I am torn between being sensitive and not wanting to waste an opportunity to post this:

I used to shoot paint ball with a guy who wore a ghillie suit. He managed to start himself on fire. I have never been on fire but stop drop and role is not one of the things going in ones head. He died a few days later from lounge issues.

I have been lit up, and stop, drop, and roll were the first things I did BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST THING I THOUGHT OF AFTER OH FUCK I'M ON FIRE to get the small flames to die from the dirt I was in. When one is involved in war games and the pyro lights up not only the AO, but you as well. Yes, my uniform was about a week dirty with gas on the legs and my boots. STOP, DROP and ROLL worked great, stopped the flames and the best part was it went so fast that I wasn't even burned through the cloth.

I am glad you were ok. That guy I saw on fire he just stood there yelling.

There is a lesson in this (besides Switchblade's good one of stay calm: stop drop and roll)... which is put fire retardant on your Ghillie. We learned that in my first police M/O school. They even handed out packages of crystals you put in water and then soak the suit. When dry, it's supposed to be far less susceptible to rapidly burning. Not sure what the stuff was but I used it.... it's sold at virtually any Ghillie supply place. The instructors were very clear in saying that ghillie suites are highly-flammable and because they are usually hard to get out of... you wear an un-treated one at your own peril.

Treat your suits!

Cheers,

Sirhr
