Just would like to hear if any of you guys have used there copper solids for ELR? What was your experience with them? They have a (single feed) MTAC 278gr .338 copper solid that I'm interested in and would just like to get some feedback from you guys. Thanks

Grizz

Their 352gr bullet is used in DTM's .375CT load and there are at least a few ELR shooters here that are shooting their bullets with good results.

Just wanted to update you guys, I've been working with the Cutting Edge 338 solid copper 278gr MTAC round and it turned out to be very promising. I just finished up my load development and at 200 yards 3 shots touching with 1 flier making the entire group under 1" ......1/2 moa, @ 500 yards 5 shot group 3" with a vertical dispersion of 1.2", 4 of those shots are grouped under 1.5". I never expected to get this kind of accuracy with my Savage 110 BA. I'm now going to try some penetration/accuracy test vs the 300gr OTM Bergers in the next coming weeks.

Grizzdude, I commend you on giving some of the best R&D real-world on the Hide. Can you give more specifics on the load you're using?

Sure thing, I found the best load right at 93gr H1000 using 215 federal primers in Lapua brass. I found the best seating right at manufacture recommendation. Since these have a sealtight band that is slightly larger than .338 you don't set them by the ogive to lands. Instead since these are machined to within .001" in length, you set them by COAL which is 4.042", so they do need to be single fed.

Im going to give the 254 a run next week or so. I will be loading them to mag length at 3.9 ish. I also have some lehigh solids coming.

The BC they are claiming is retarded high at .869. According to my calculations I should get them supersonic till 2300 yards.....seems unobtainable to me.

Gonna start with 95 grains of retumbo i think. I hope to get them 3000+ fps

Good deal, keep us updated on how the 254gr work out for you. I'm just waiting for the weather to get a little better and the snow to melt a little bit before I take the 278gr CEB out to 1500 and 2000 yards. At 1000 yards they definitely penetrate barriers where the 300gr Bergers stop dead in their tracks. I'm also finding that the bullets maintain about 97%+ original weight after impact.

I dont have a ton of time to write this but I did do some testing this after noon.

I loaded the following at 2.845 OAL (shorter than recommended to insure bullets did not deform after hitting mag under recoil. Was given the "good to go" by the manufacturer when asking if it was advisable)

Retumbo, Lapua Brass, 215m primer, 2.714 trim length

94 gr, 94.5 gr, 95 gr, 95.5 gr, 96 gr, 96.5 gr, 97 gr, 97.5 gr, and 98 gr

At 97.5 I experience a bit of crunch when seating the bullet and a bit more at 98 but nothing too bad.

After shooting the first 8 (3 shots each) loads I was seeing sub moa groups but nothing that was outstanding. My standard 300 grain otm produces 1/4 moa on typical days.

Then it happened, I got to the 98 grain load. I picked a new blank target dot on my cardboard at 200 yards, and let the three go.
The center to center was 3/8 at that distance giving a 3/16 moa result.

After getting these results i shot a few more, indicating my results were not a fluke. Three of these additional shots were on mild steel, leaving less damage than my otm's - thought it would be worse seeing that they are solid copper.

Next, 245 grain lehigh bullets.

[h=2]Cutting Edge bullet, Thank you for the info.[/h]

Nice stuff I'm seeing the same results at 200 yards also, I'm trying to get a group at 1000 yards but the winds have been messing me up here lately, I really need a calm day to shoot groups at 1K because the wind swirls out here.

I am sure the winds are pretty bad. I typically dont have to deal with much more than a gusty 20mph on the worst of days where I shoot. I normally see about a 10 mph wind at 5 o'clock.

I see the bc on lehigh 245 grainers is around .869 or so and would like to do some testing next with those. The only thing I am worried about is that the barrel has to be "conditioned" when switching. According to David Fricke it takes about 5 rounds or so. I really hope this doesnt have to be done if I stick with them for a period of time.

I am not sure that they owners of the ranges at matches will steel targets would like me much if I was shooting those there....although according to my ballistic calculations they should be good to more than 2300 yards.
