I am thinking of picking up a savage 110 on the cheap for the action. It is an 80's production model currently in 7mm rem mag so i dont believe it is a large ring model. I am confident i can make this to a 300 win. But can anything larger fit? Would it handle a 338 lapua? What do i need to know?

Only the 110 BA action will handle the 338 lapua. That's why savage built the 110 BA. The largest caliber I've made a savage is the 338 edge. The Rem Ultra mags are the biggest cartridges that a 110 action can accommodate safely. They won't be able to feed from the magazine because of their OAL. Some have machined metal from the receiver to feed from an AI mag. Not recommended by me. Savage did make a center feed rifle chambered for the Ultra mags, but they are scarce.

Thats a bitchin rifle. Cheap is one of my main agendas with this build i will probably stay with the 300 win mag. I would like to shoot longer bullets like the new mod 1 rounds the military has. Does the chamber/mag need to be modified at all to handle these the way they were designed. I have a tikka in 300 win and the mag will not accomodate the 3.45-3.5 coal. I have a little brass on hand and want to reload for the 220-230 gr bullets. Am i barking up the wrong tree?
