Guys, I have a problem and I am no expert, so I am coming here. I purchased a 16.5 inch 700 AAC-SD several months ago and never fired it because I was waiting for my Manners mini chassis to show up before I mounted the scope. While I was waiting, LRI had the group buy on bolt fluting, so I sent it off. Just got it all together a few weeks ago but was not able to get to the range until today. I was all set to test out my new rifle, but the bolt will not close when there is a round in the chamber ! I checked the screws on the stock and they are not too long. The scope base screws are not either. Another thing, the gun will not extract the shell either, but I am guessing it is because the bolt does not close on it ? The bolt closes just fine when the gun is unloaded. I tried two different brands of factory ammo, no reloads. What am I missing ? I hope it is an easy fix, deer season starts Saturday !!
TIA

The barrel and chamber are untouched from the factory? sounds like the barrel has been worked on. More details please, will it chamber an empty case? will it work out of the chassis? and without scope base?

Factory new gun. It was in the mini-chassis when I went to the range today . I put it back in the factory Hogue when I got home with the same results. Just checked, it will not close on an empty brass either. I have not pulled the base off to check yet

Yes, I thought of that first thing , but the 4 digits on the bolt are the same as the last four of the serial number .

When you say it won't extract the round, are you having to give the bolt handle a good whack to get it loose or is the round just sitting in there and the bolt handle moves freely. Just out of curiosity, when you attempt to chamber the round and it gets stuck, are there indications on the surface of the bullet that would indicate that the round is being jammed in the barrel? Sounds like the bolt may be screwed but need more info on the issue and need to compare your bolt with factory specs

Edit: did it chamber a round before the bolt work was done. I know you say you never shot it but did you ever cycle some brass to check it when you purchased the rifle

The round is just sitting there and the bolt moves freely . I can drop a round into the chamber and push the bolt all the way forward , but not down . Then when I pull the bolt back , the round is left in the chamber

Not really . Most of my buddies are shooting Rugers and Tikkas. The only other Reminton in the group is a .260.
They mainly are Hunters. I just got interested in trying the long range shooting .

Get a roofing knife, cut all the carpeting around her at least 2 feet in every direction around her, and roll her up in the carpet. Use a tie down to keep the carpet closed. Find a dump or dump site and roll it into the there. Don't be lazy. Get the package all the way under the garbage or into a deep hole. No "shallow graves." Do not dump her into a body of water because she WILL float. whatever you do, don't try to use her f'ing credit card at a 7-11 to buy zig-zags. And stop choking hookers.

You're welcome.

Was this a Factory NIB rifle or did you buy it from somebody?

Either the headspace is too short or something's up with the extractor and it will not snap over the rim. By chance is this a .223Rem?

My bet is with the extractor.

Another check. Look at the bolt face, you should see a small silver pin (ejector) that should move in and out with the pressure from your finger. If you push on the ejector, does the pin move freely or is it stiff and will not depress....grasping at straws here as this is difficult to fix over the net.

Damn buffybuster beat me to it, I type slow

If you are shooting a .308 the .260 shares the same bolt face.

It sounds like your live round may not be seating properly in the bolt where the extractor can get a grip on it. You may want to call the company that fluted your bolt and ask for their recommendations.

Will the bolt close without a round being put in the chamber? Are you using factory ammunition or hand loads?

Can you remove a bullet from a round and see if it will close, if you have no empty brass or take a felt pin and mark the bullet so you can
see if it is hitting the lands.
You have check to see that the barrel is clear ? a friend of mine was playing with his OAL gauge and forgot a bullet in there.

Did the pin move freely or was it stiff and you forced it down. It should have a good spring tension but not be too hard. If the pin was stuck extended that will keep the bolt from picking up the brass. I would break down the entire bolt assembly and put it back together and see if it functions any better. Your OM will explain this if you have never taken the bolt apart before.

I know it it is VERY hard to diagnose problems without seeing what is going on and I thank you all for your help . I will try my best to describe what is going on:
I am able to load a round into the mag. The bolt pushes it into the chamber, but I can not rotate the bolt down to lock it in place . When I pull the bolt back open, the round stays in the chamber.

If there is no round ( or empty brass) I can push the bolt forward and rotate the handle down .

Take your gun to a gunsmith, have him take it apart and clean the shit out of the bolt and flush the chamber. I had my bolt coated recently, closed the bolt and it wouldn't open again. He worked his magic and now it is smoother than it has ever been. I think he charged me just under $100.00.
