I am brand new to this forum. I read the optics selection sticky thread and i am still kind of confused and have some questions as to what scope i should purchase. I am not experienced at all with long range shooting. The longest shooting i have done was 500 yards in bootcamp with a trijicon acog. I recently bought a springfield m25 and it needs an optic. I plan on using the rifle for shooting 100 to 800 yards. I do not have access to anywhere that would allow me to shoot 1000 plus yards but if i ever got the chance i would love to try. I have had my eye on the Vortex Razor 5-20, from what i have read from trigger monkey the scope would be over powered for what i plan to do with my rifle. Would the scope be too much for a 308? i have looked at USO LR-17 3.2 -17 and the leupold mark 4. My budget is flexible but i dont want to cut corners. I am looking for a scope that i will have for a long time. I have a feeling people post these threads all the time but any advice would help a lot. I want to learn as much as i can so i can make the right choice.

Get the Razor. If you don't need 20x then you dial down but if you do it's there. That's the joy of a variable powered optic. The Razor is an excellent optic and has very good reticle choices. You will be happy with it.

I personally would go USO, but nothing wrong with 3x more on the Vortex :)

I agree with Rob. Get the Vortex. It is a great optic, especially at the price point it occupies. USO makes a good optic and undoubtably stands behind their procduct. I have just been more statisfied with my Vortex products. And when it comes to Leupold I haven't seen a need for one of their products in years.

why do you prefer USO over Vortex? I know USO will cost me more, and that they got a contract with the USMC but why is it worth more money?

Look at his signature line. Just playing Lazy ;)

Seriously, I have owned 5 USO scopes and 3 Razors and would take a Razor any day of the week. The Razor knobs I liked better. They are easy to use and you can get a perfect zero as they have a system that you can zero without clicks so if you were a little high or low and one more click put you on the other side of the zero you can get dead on with the Vortex. You get a ton of elevation with the Razor as well.

Another vote for the Razor. Great scope. I've had Leupold, SWFA, Steiner and am now running a Razor. It's not too much scope at all for your application. Look at buying from Mile High Shooting (a Hide vendor). They are offering this scope with a FREE Spuhr one piece mount. That's a $410 mount.

thanks for all the advice. i am lucky enough to have a built in rail on my rifle so all i need is the rings. I see that the razor has an option for a ten mil turret instead of a 5 mil turret. what are your guys opinion about that?

Always had good experience with Leupold. Not knocking other scopes / disagreeing with anyone here. Just saying Leup makes fine glass.

Some have said Vortex glass is a bit clearer. Others have said that a subjective measurement. I've never compared the two side by side.

Maybe others can comment that have compared a Leup vs. Vortex "same market" scopes. (i.e. NOT a VX-1 vs. a high dollar Vortex)

Is that a question? But really get the 10 mil turret. I can't come up with a single reason not to.

Either. The Razor has a zero stop so it shouldn't be an issue for you. I went with 10 mils because I don't like cranking my elevation turret a lot. My .308 was 11+ mils at 1,000 yards, which would be 2+ rotations with a 5-mil but just 1+ with the 10-mil. I can't remember my 800 yard dope with my .308 but you'll just need to remember how many turns you put on it, especially if you start shooting comps that are fast paced and have multiple targets at different ranges. Some people like the spacing of the 5-mil turrets, myself I've always been fine with 10-mil spacings.

If you just plan on using this on KD ranges to 800, the 5-mil would work fine. If you go with Razor, what reticle were you looking at?

..i am lucky enough to have a built in rail on my rifle so all i need is the rings....

The free Spurh I mentioned that Mile High is including is rings...it's just a one piece unit instead of two separate rings. It still mounts to your rail, like any other two piece ring set. Has a built in bubble level and really well built. Like this:

And here it is in black with my Razor:

Sorry for all the edits!

You dick! :)

I've dealt with USO for years and they're great people, great glass, bunch of options, built like a tank, and American Made! But either way Jwink, I'll sell you a Vortex :)

On Vortex, I think it's nice to have a scope manufacture that can compete with your top scope builders and offer their product @ 2/3 of the price
