I am about to pick up a PTG (Pacific Tool Gauge) Detachable Bottom Metal for my HS precision stock (700 long action)

Was wondering if this is something I can do with some files and sandpaper... or if I need a mill or a gunsmith?

I have read many mixed reviews. Same say they did it in 30 minutes of sanding. Others say they sent it back because it was too much work, or they shipped it to a gunsmith.

Let me know what youve done.... throw up some pics too

I really do not want to bother with the local gunsmiths! Much rather do it myself if possible.

How patient are you is the real question. While it can be done with a file and sandpaper a mill would be MUCH better to ensure a clean fit with even gaps all around. That said I have even seen smiths use a mill and do poor work. Or…look at the Accurate Mag single stack bottom metal that fits in a BDL opening with no modifications. I have used the accurate mag stuff on several builds in HS stocks and the fit is great!!!

Didn't I read somewhere that PTG had some drop-in bottom metal for the Remmys?

I have done two of my stocks and they turned out really good. I used a mill bit in a regular milwaukee power drill. Measure with a caliper and go slow, you may get lucky and not have to remove much of the aluminum block, one of mine was like that. The fiberglass material cuts really easy . Takes a couple hours to get it done but well worth it.

Is there a drop in DBM that accepts AI mags? In a local gunshop today, I found a DROP IN DBM for my HS precision stock for $300+ but it used some kind of HS precision mags :/

According to this video, there is a lot to it:

Installing a Badger Ordnance M5 trigger guard - YouTube

Like the video states, you need a lot of specialized tools to do it right. I would highly recommend a professional gunsmith or company that can handle this kind of work. Here is a link to GA Precision :Services - GA Precision . They can do it for just $75.00 with the customer supplied Badger M5 trigger Guard.

Good luck!

I have an hs stock with the drop in PTG long action dbm. No filling, it drops right in. It doesn't take the standard aics mags but with a shim on the front they will work, search my started threads to find pics. It uses 3.775 length mags, readily available from accurate (pm blacktidesarmament for a good deal) and supposedly ai makes that length as well, not sure though.
The dbm in question is on PTG's site called rem military drop in, something like that
