Guys I have a older AR10(T) (metal mags)..

It has the Green Carbon Fiber Free Float... I am wanting to swap them out for a RAILED hand guard that still free floats it but also covers ALOT of the 24" factory stainless barrel. This has the factory railed gas block as well... sooo it would be nice if that fit UNDER the railed guard.

I MAY look at cutting the barrel back to 20" and threading it as well......

Let me know what you all think is the better looking and more functional setup.

Thanks

I have an Apex Machine 12.75" handguard and pic rail on a 21" GAP 10B Armalite that I've liked enough to pickup another 15" guard for a 24" 6.5 Creedmoor on a Black Rain Norguard receiver set. Good grip and feel, ability to hang short rail sections for sights, bipod, etc and good clearance for an adjustable gas block. Everyone has their preferences, these are mine, for my purposes. PM me your email and can share some pics of either.

A 15" handguard will cover ~2" or so of the journal/gas block of your rifle. There isn't a railed handguard in existence that will cover the HUGE picatinny railed gasblock that Armalite uses, so if that's the direction you are going, you might as well take the opportunity to get a quality lo-pro gas block (whether adjustable or not...your call) so that it'll fit under whichever handguard you decide on. Depending on how much real estate you really need/want on your handguard, the PRI 15" offerings (both the Delta and the traditional, round handguards) are outstanding products. I'm in the process of helping a friend out on a .308 build now and he's going to run the 15" Delta with a full-length, SPR-style top rail and it will be a gem when its done. Similarly, the Apex previously mentioned is a very nice setup that will allow you to add rails where you need them and skip what you don't. The texturing on the Apex units is also a VERY nice touch that you don't see with most handguards (they are generally smooth or railed).

And by the way...the older, non-vented, CF free-float handguards are pretty highly prized, so if you do decide to swap it out and get something else...keep in mind that they fetch a good price that'll help to offset the cost of your new handguard. There are folks looking for them on BARFCOM pretty regularly. ;)

try the Apex handguard.

+1 on what the guys above said.

Mattrmvpd: it IS an aluminum handguard and will get COLD if you're out in winter temps like we have here. Surely your winter temps aren't too bad. My solution is vet-wrap around the handguard to keep the cold metal from direct contact with hands. Or just use gloves, lol.

good luck with your choice.

Yeah... I know its really more for some looks than anything..

The problem is that the Float Tube is GREEN.... the rest of the furniture is BLACK Magpul... I guess I could sway out the grip...and stock... but in the end it would be nice to have the FULL rail in case I wanted to add NV later down the road...or quick detach sling studs...

SOOOOO... I guess.. I would need the railed handguard.... and a new gas block. I am going to check with my local shop and see IF they have anything in stock.

Thanks
Matt
