Greetings, I am Mandalore of the clan Brad Pitt. If you don't understand the Brad Pitt thing, come to Oklahoma D-Day in June and ask for Brad Pitt. You'll either be pointed our direction, or you'll get an icy stare.

But really, the name's Mandalore, at least as far as you're concerned, and the game is paintball. I'm also a computer nerd, a Jeeper, concealed carrier (Kimber Gold Match II), and a student of krav maga. I enjoy pistol calibers that start with .4, spending time with my wife, fast cars, and long walks on the simulated beaches of paintball Normandy. I do play some video games, but I much prefer to be outdoors. Shooting, paintballing, running, hiking, whatever I can do. I'm lucky enough to have a beautiful wife who also enjoys the splendor of the outdoors, paintball, driving and shooting. She carries a Kahr CW9 right now, soon to be replaced, which brings me to...

The reason I'm here. I made a deal with my wife that I wouldn't get a rifle until we got her a new 1911. Well, we're well on the way to getting her that 1911 and I'm starting to look at rifles. Eventually I see myself having probably two rifles. I'd like to get a Springfield M1A, probably a Scout Squad or SOCOM 16, with a 2x or 4x red dot. Home defense, short to medium range work, maybe hunting. I'd also like to build a long-range rifle, which is where I hope to tap your expertise.

I want a bolt-action rifle in something like .308 or .300 win mag. I know for target shooting some of the smaller calibers fly faster and flatter, but I like the thought of having more mass and retained energy in case there's something besides paper at the other end. I'll be posting a thread later on all this, but for now, here I am!

Well your M1A will be .308 so do you want the same caliber for your bolt gun? It will keep things easier. I recommend not using a belted magnum cartridge as a beginner as there is really no need unless you want to hunt elk at 500 yards. But that and the term beginner are for sure mutually exclusive.

I'd buy a .308 so you can use the same bullets and brass in both guns but the M1A will likely beat your brass up a bit. I'd keep the two using separate brass if you can help it. Actually, I guess I was just assuming you were going to reload. Are you?

I would like to get into reloading, but have no experience or equipment right now. And I have no problem using .308 for both guns. As much as I'd like to get into really long range shooting, about the best I'm going to get around here is maybe 500 yards or so. For the bolt-action I've just been lead to believe that .300 win mag flies a little flatter, but you are probably right in that it would just be easier to use the same cartridge.
