Hey guys. It's been a while since I've been on. I just got me a new remington 700 5R in .308. I just bought 200 rounds of federal gold medal match in 175gr. I couldn't get my hands on any XM118LR. Was wanting to know if the ballistics on these two are the same? They are both manufactured by federal and both 175gr Sierra matchking bullets. Thanks guys.

The reason I'm needing to know is my knight's armament bulllet flight app already has the ballistic profile for the m-24 with XM118LR ammo loaded into it and if these are the same just with civilian designation and military designations being different I won't have to chrono anything. Thanks guys.

You still need to chrono if you want your ballistics program to be reasonably close. And then confirm with real-world drops.
No shortcuts..

I don't know anything about KAC's ballistic program since I use Ballistic AE, but easiest way for me to do it was shoot the ammo, find your dope and then true it in your ballistic calculator.

24" barrel 5R rifling. Same exact weapon as the M-24 except for being a short action instead of a long and wearing a different hs precision stock.

Exactly, but if your off by 50-75 fps, you will be off by an inch at 500 yards, and it would widen out to 5 inches at 1K yards.

I have shot both from my TRG, and there was a difference in velocity. IIRC the 118LR was higher by 40-50 fps. The smallest things can impact velocity, including (on a very small level) how tight your chamber has been reamed, as your brass will seal better at the neck with a tight chamber.

Ok thanks guys. Any ideas on how to "true" the KAC software? New to the software myself. Not sure how to do it. I'm also using nightforce exbal program on PDA.

There's no reason to stick to one kind of ammo simply because that's what's in your ballistics program. Chrono your rounds, get an accurate BC for your bullet, then plug in the numbers. If you don't have a chrono, gather your data and calculate the muzzle velocity.

Thanks guys. Has anyone shot either of these rounds through a factory 700 5R? How did it perform with group size and at distance out to 1,000 yards?

Hey graham. I have a chrono but how do you figure out the "accurate" BC of the bullet other than what Sierra gives for it? Thanks.

Google: "find BC using muzzle velocity"

Seriously, though, as a practical matter I get chrono readings at distance and let my ballistics program do the math.

How do you get chrono readings at distance? How do you not accidentally shoot your chrono???

Also how far do you set your chrono up from the muzzle with a brake and without???

I have 1 Box of XM118LR left if ya want it....had bought a bunch from cheaper than dirt... but my Savage 12BVSS like hornady Tap 168 A-max better... if you want more than 1box try Cheaper Than Dirt...

I watched a guy shoot a 5 shot group of 175gr FGMM .308 followed by a 5 shot group of lake city M118s 175 gr and they were nearly indistinguishable at 100 yds. Didn't shoot anything beyond that.
