2013 Steel City Precision Rifle Challenge - Birmingham, AL

Guys,

It really gets too dark to see much after 4:30pm so we'll close down the zero range and Friday registration then. Stages and par times are all set. Every shooting area will have a little different challenge and flavor. It's gonna be fun!

See you soon.

Dave, does this mean no zeroing at all today? Even if we are early?

I need to come check my zero. Something is off on my setup after verifing last weekend. Nothing has been touched so I may be up there in a few. I had to leave earlier to work for a few mins.

Great time today. Thanks to everyone who got the match together. Saw lots of good. Shooters today as well while RO'ing or assisting at stage 4. Seeing some of the people truck it up the hill was great, also the fellows who walked up it seemed to have a much better first hit ratio on the off hand shot. Nice to meet everyone I spoke to. I have no clue what your names are but everyone I met were first class people for sure! See you guys next year!

Just returned from the match.....I want to thank Dave, the RO's, and everyone involved in making this match happen !!!

That being said.....FOR SALE: custom SSC .260, w/ an XRS sitting in a McRee Chasis....$20 (maybe I'll have better luck with tennis)

My hats off to Dave, Jim, John, and all the crew members at Steel City. Outstanding course of fire. It was defiantly a unique setup, of which I've never experienced. In my honest opion, the uniqueness sets this match apart from all others. I sure hopeyou guys make this a yearly match, and if so count me in. Keep up the awesome work.

To all the RO's, thank you x1000. Without you guys, the match wouldn't have ran smooth. You all had to take time out of your schedule, Cost for hotels, fuel, food, etc and for that I thank you.

Big thanks to Jim for getting up one hell of a prize table. To all the sponsors, which over half of them were there in person, thank you. Sponsors are what keeps this sport alive, and if you were there to see the prize table, you would understand what I'm talking about. I'm talking over $30,000 in prizes. That is very impressive. A special thanks to Tod Litt from NF for putting an F1 scope on the prize table for me to scoop up.

It was pleasure meeting all the new faces and getting to see the usuals ones. Congrats to Jason Greene on the win, you earned it brother.

I'm not sure I would change anything about this match. I had 7 in my squad and I didn't even have time to make a sandwich. That's exactly the way I like it. I'm used to taking my iPad to bide my time time between shooting. There was no time for that. Thanks to Dave and Jim and the other guys that worked the match. I would love to shoot a match without something on my rifle going wrong but maybe next time. Thanks to Short Action Customs for my gift cert. Congrats to Greene. This value in this match at 100 bucks is incomparable.
Thanks again,
T

It was a great match. My first. Thanks to David, Richard, John and the other guys who made this match possible. I wish i would shot better but maybe next time.

Thanks to RO,s they ran this a smooth as possible.

It was great meeting some new people in area 4!
I was happy to hear that only one person fell on the trek up the hill (sorry ron). I wanna thank the ro's that helped us proof stages, and assist with set up.
I really want the thank Austin Cook, Zak Smith, Dave Horn, Mark Kuczka and Brandon. You guys did an excellent job helping things move smoothly! Your time and dedication to the sport is much appreciated.
Thanks to all the shooters, you all did a great job navigating the courses of fire safely and efficiently.
Thanks to the sponsors for supporting this match...We cannot put an event on like this without you all.

Till next time.....

We will have mike goebel from southern sports photography taking pictures at the match. He will post all pics on his website, PhotoReflect - Southern Sports Photography.
Mike has experience taking pics at shooting events.
Be sure to check out his site...

Almost forgot, i want to thank mike goebel from southern sports photography. He got some great pics from this match. Please visit his site to check them out.

I thoroughly enjoyed being able to help on Area 4. What a great crew!

Thanks to the match organizers and all the staff who helped. Thanks to all the shooters who came out with positive attitudes to have a safe, fun experience. I didn't hear or see anyone complain about anything. That says a lot about how this was organized and run.

Speaking of attitudes... Gotta give a shout out to David Martin and Jason Greene. What superb gentlemen and professional sportsmen. I was happy to see these guys on top of the leader board. On Area 4, stage 4B, David came through with an amazing run. He cleaned the stage with first round hits on all but two targets. The two he barely missed he quickly picked up with follow up shots. Then on the surprise "4C" stage he drew down on the third target array by mistake (an easy thing to do and something LOTS of guys did) and called a target. He noticed his error, corrected to the second array and started getting hits. Two 3-point hits was pretty darn good. SOLID performance by a humble guy. That was the best score of the day by far on this stage.

Two shooters later here comes Jason up the hill. The first guy cheering Jason on was David. Jason made an almost identical run with eight first round hits and two targets picked up on the second shots. So, it came down to the 4C stage. Jason did the same thing (great minds think alike!) and drew down on array three. But he noticed the mistake in time to adjust to array two and call the small plate (7 point value). I looked over at David and we waited until that first shot rang out and... Impact! David's face lit up and he started laughing.

David was the first guy to congratulate Jason on the faster run. And Jason was just the most humble guy about it.

It was an experience I'll never forget.

I didn't get too many opportunities to take pictures, but did snap a few on 4B.
Marcus smacking the first plate off-hand after running up the hill. First round hit. Give up the cigarettes brother and you won't have to stand in the damn box catching your breathe so long. LOL.

Walt Sailers on position 3. Kept his cool. Always happy. Laughs at opportunities to do better (aka problems!). What an awesome guy and gentleman.

Sean, tryin' to get away from his comfort zone of the AI chassis. You look very different not running a chassis brother. Ha, ha. :)

My buddy Ron was the guy to bust his butt up the hill. He shook it off, sucked down 17 Tylenol and rocked on.

My buddy Chris rockin' out "Jeffrey, the Tactical Giraffe" rifle. This is the surprise stage 4C "sling" stage.

Thomas running the stage...

Tod Litt, my friend from Nightforce. He had a solid enough performance to earn him a #4 finish position. Proud of ya, bro. That BEAST sure helped I know.

I'll try to dig through some more pics later. I am beat. Was a LONG day driving over.

Before I go, special shout out to my buddy Joey. This was hist first match ever and he has only had his precision rifle for about a month. This was his second time ever shooting past 200 yards! And he did VERY well. I told him just go slow enough to get your hits. Use this as a learning opportunity and don't be worried about the time. He did just that and it worked great for him. He stayed calm and focused on the targets. He didn't miss many either. Well, except when his shot the "2" marker on 4B! He mistakenly thought THAT was the target and center punched it. We all got a laugh about that. I guess technically it wasn't a miss. ;-)

Great seeing everyone. Hopefully we can take David and Jim into doing this more than once a year!

Mark

Was that your bullet hole?
I laughed my ass off when I saw that!

It was center also. I didn't know he actually hit the sign at first just though it was about 5' away from the first target. Every shot after that was dead nuts center. I'm bringing a seat belt for the front of the four wheeler next time. :) good times had by all!

I had a blast. Thanks to David Tapp, John Cuckler, Richard Crouse, and Jim Saunders. You guys put on a hell of a match that I was happy to be apart of helping out. The prize table was nuts and thanks to all the sponsors. It was a fun match that seemed to be challenging but not overly hard. My favorite part of Saturday was watching some of the shooters faces up on 4B when John said "bolt back magazine in, your next stage starts now", the looks were priceless. To all the shooters, up on 4 you guys shot well that I saw, we tried to make it difficult but not overly hard to were no one enjoyed it.

To all the guys I met, Mark, Brandon, Zac, and old friends, you guys are the reason I show up at these things is to hang out with good friends and have a good time.

Austin

Awesome match!! I had a great time, and really enjoyed all the stages. I think the one day format was excellent. I'm home on Sunday, and don't have to scramble to get all my gear situated and put back in another vehicle for work Monday! There was very little down time, and all the stages ran very smoothly. I know you can't make everybody happy, but I enjoyed the rifle / handgun concept at this match. I think the MD used the facility very well and was very creative in setting up stages using as much of the range as possible.

The prize table was huge for a one day match! Thank you to all the sponsors who supported this match!! I got to meet a few industry guys I have not had face time with and thank them for their support.

I will definitely be back for this match again!

That top page didn't come out too well. Does anyone have a better picture of it?

You were 16th, brother. AWESOME finish and even more impressive when you factor in the equipment issues Dave Walker told me you were having. I'll try to post up the pic I took later.

Mark

Well, beat to the punch. LOL. At least scores are posted now.

On behalf of Richard, John and Jim, thanks again for shooting with us yesterday! I just e-mailed the final results out to everyone on a PDF so you'll have them. Congrats to Jason and all the top finishers! Our intent was to make this a rifle match but include enough pistol to challenge your ability with a handgun and make things fun. Sounds like we hit the mark pretty well in that regard. I appreciate everyone's comments and feedback. We'll definitely take everything under consideration and use it to improve things next time.

A BIG thanks to the RO's and Sponsors! Anyone who's ever run a match knows how important it is to have good people running the stages. Nobody's perfect but I was very proud of our match staff and RO's. We are very honored and appreciative of our sponsors. A big shout out to Mark and Dave from Accurate Ordnance! Not only did they donate that beautiful custom rifle to the prize table, but they both worked hard on the stages helping things run smoothly. Mark, thanks for posting the pics!

Thanks again! We look forward to more of these type events at Steel City!

stage 1 A was humbling to say the least for me.

the one thing i would like to see added, with in the squads is shooters could spot for other shooters. the guys at the top don't need it but the guys at the bottom like me really could have used it . LOL

thanks again for a great match and great people.

WOW! My hats off to David's wife, David, Jim, Richard, and John along with the fantastic RO's and Sponsors. You guys pulled off a World Class match.....and all in a day. I've attended several of David's carbine matches in the past and knew that it was going to be a quality match based off of prior experience and boy was it ever. I am new to the Precision rifle scene but not new to competitive shooting. I do this for fun and as a measure of improvement. I had an ABSOLUTE BLAST and learned alot about the areas that I need to polish up. I have always said that if there was only one match a year I could shoot, it would be one of David's. I still stand by that comment.

I carpooled to the match with the guys from Accurate Ordnance and we were having a conversation about people in general and David was part of that conversation. We talked about his awesome attitude and just all out good nature as well as him being a very talented all around shooter. I told Mark, David and Thomas that they were about to witness what Dave was really good at and I'm rather certain that although we were all dog tired on the ride home, our satisfaction and fun meters were pegged and they all confirmed that I was right in my comment.

The match flowed very smooth with very minimal downtime. The stages were challenging but not demeaning to the newer shooters. The prize table was most excellent for the return on a low entry fee, one day format type of match. I would love to see more matches of this nature around the country.

I shot my Accurate Ordnance built 6.5 Creedmoor at the match and it ran flawlessly and hit where I aimed every single time. When things failed, it was the nut behind the trigger's fault. I could not have asked for a better rifle to play this game with. I ran the Nightforce BEAST for glass. I can say that this match was the first real time that the scope was put through its paces in Match conditions and I am confident that it will be well received amongst the Tactical Precision shooting crowd. The eyebox was huge and ever forgiving when tested in all of the awkward positions that the match produced. The optics were bright and the resolution was crisp and clear. The adjustments were FAST and accurate with great tactile feel. As I have heard, it is a little intimidating at first, but it was a piece of cake to operate on the clock when the stress levels were high.

To Squad 3B.....Good times and great to get to meet and shoot with all of you. I hope to see more of you at future events.

I do know that Nightforce wants to be a bigger part of y'alls game and hopefully the BEAST will bring a little more relevance.

Congrats Jason for taking home the beautiful Accurate Ordnance rifle as a reward for the Match Winner title. I envy you as I wanted that rifle badly. I have been eyeballing it at their shop for a few weeks since they finished it. Nice job Dave Martin for the followup position and taking that Nightforce F1. John.....I was really eyeballing that Glock from the guys at Precision Tactical Arms Company - you surprised me when you swept in and scooped it up. I was wanting to add it to my collection of Glocks badly. You forced me in to picking up that Leupy but I am overly grateful for such generous sponsors. I got a kick out of all of the cameras that started flashing when I picked it up. :) I will be sending my FDE Gen 4 G34 to those guys to get their good looking slide treatment and make it my new match gun as I am a huge Glock fan.

Thanks again to David Tapp, his lovely wife, Jim, Richard, John, all of the RO's, the sponsors, and the Brock's Gap Training Center for the use of their facility, and to all of the shooters for making this sport so great! The event was truly WORLD CLASS!

See you guys around!

i have told lots of people over the last several years that dave's carbine match is my favorite and as fun as any match out there, but now i'll have to change that to dave's rifle match. Heck, i had more fun with the side match than i've had at some 2day matches this year. (speaking of which, I owe larry a few bucks... somebody send me his email address pls). I think they made the best use of the facilities and had very fun stages, which had a different flavor than most matches. I thought the mix of rifle and handgun was perfect, too.

I was especially pleased to see Jason win and have really enjoyed watching him shoot well this year. Congratulations!

I liked it! I am fairly new to the tactical game but I have taken to it like a hog to mud. The facilities are first class, the RO's were most helpful and patient, the competitors were helpful to each other, the match ran smoothly, the stages were imaginative. What's not to like? My squad, 4A, was great to shoot with. Now if you can just cut that ridge down on 4B or install a tactical escalator or maybe just add a senior citizens discount in the form of points.
Many thanks for the sponsors, what a great showing of prizes. My only suggestion would be to have bolder numbers on the line targets at the 100 yard range. Hope to be back next time.

David and Jim you guys nailed it. You wanted to make a fun match that people would want to come back to and IMHO you far succeeded that goal. It was a blast!! I like up tempo matches with movement, time management, mixed shooting positions, pistol, etc. With the space you guys worked with and the stage layouts it was impressive. I have studied trying to help with positive feedback and came to the conclusion I wouldn't change a thing about the course of fire you guys had.

Thanks to all you RO's and hands who helped make it possible. Your time is much appreciated and these matches wouldn't work without you guys and gals.

HUGE thanks to all the sponsors. Man that was one amazing prize table. You guys stepped up big time.

Special thanks to Mark and David of Accurate Ordnance for laying that beautiful rifle down on the prize table. It is much appreciated. Also was a pleasure to get to meet you Mark.

Was great getting to see a bunch of friends again and also meeting some new faces as well. Hope to see many of you again at future matches.

Awesome shooting David Martin. As always I highly enjoyed being squad-ed with you and the friendly competitiveness that goes on makes things that much more fun.

MrBungle or any other new member or just anyone in general, if you guys are ever squad-ed with me at a match and need some help, please feel free to ask. Will do what ever in my limited knowledge I can to help you out.

Thanks to David, John, Richard, and Jim for putting on an outstanding match. I enjoyed it very much and the mixture of precision rifle and pistol was fun. I will definitely shoot it again as long as you guys will put it on. For anybody that wasn't able to make it, you did miss out. Don't let that happen again. Thanks to all of the sponsors to this event. I hope you guys got a lot out of it and will return in the future.

It was my first match of this kind and after getting a taste of it, I hope to be able to seek out some other precision rifle matches to shoot, although next time hopefully with my gun running a little better :).

Alan

Match directors: Great job orchestrating and administering this match. It was well thought out, well executed, maximized the potential of the facility, tested shooters' marksmanship, and was a lot of fun.

Range officers: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Without your selfless efforts, these matches can't happen. Every single RO was superb in attitude, sportsmanship and judgement. Exceptionally well done. Thanks again, and sorry for y'alls foul weather for your shooting day on Friday.

Fellow competitors: I had a blast. It was a pleasure and an honor to meet all of you, and see familiar folks. Great shooting out there!

Sponsors: Thank you kindly for your support in this sport. You provided a sweet prize table that made for some very difficult decisions. All of the participants are very thankful for your generous contributions! It sure is fun to win something, even if you're a little further down on the finishing order.

Thanks again, everyone!

Great shooting Jason it was a pleasure for John,David,Jim and myself to put on the match. I hope it showed some of the capabilities of our range.

Thank you to all the RO's and sponsors. When we went to the sponsors they all steped up.

Thank you all again

Richard

The sponsors were very generous. They are doing a great job promoting our sport. I am already looking forward to next year's match.
