this will be a hunting rifle. i am not taking my 5R 308 in the woods. one, it is heavy, 2, i'm just not.

a bit of a background, a buddy of mine bought a remmy AAC-SD 308 during the scare last january because it had a threaded barrel, he was afraid of the "ban", then decided that he didn't want it after things cooled down. he sold it to me, BNIB unfired for $500.

i was kicking around the idea of cutting it down to 16" and getting it threaded so it would be more handy in the woods with my suppressor. i do have an HS precision stock i bought from a hide member that will replace the rubber, flexible stock that is on it now.

so i am wondering if 16" is good enough to achieve good terminal ballistics for a 200yd shot to thwack a deer. it is in the Penns woods, so even a 200yd shot is pushing it as far as range.

thanks!

You'll have plenty of umph for 200 yard shots on deer... Double that or beyond if needed. I'm pushing 168 Nosler Ballistic Tips at just under 2,600 fps out of my 16" 308.

At 200 yds there will be minimal difference in terminal performance between a 20" and a 16" .308.

Even at extended range, the difference is less than most believe. A 16" 308 will have generally the same terminal performance at about 50 yards less than the same round would have out of a 20" 308 (e.g., at 750 yds the 16" round will have about the same velocity as the 20" round will have at 800).

Its generally 20 fps drop per inch of barrel cut off. So from 20" down to 16" you will be droping something in the 100 fps range.

I've shot the same rifle to 900yd with 168gr TAP.

You won't have ANYTHING to worry about for deer at any reasonable (say, <500yd) distance.

cool. thanks guys.

it just sucks that i just now thought of this yesterday, and deer season starts in 2 weeks. hopefully the gunsmith can get it done before then, so i can get behind it for a few rounds.

i'll be "that guy" at the range, suday night before opening day, sighting in the rifle. lol
