7-300WSM or 300WM for fun between 800 and 1.2k?

I have read until I'm blue in the face? Seems every blog I've read, the bloggers only have either or. Non have shot or own both. And for that reason most blogs have been screwed. Can you all give me any real world advice on which is better? Recoil is not an issue, with any luck I will have a tbac before either are built.

Thanks in advance..

At this distance BC is the king. Recoil being out of the picture - 30 cal wins.

Get both!!! I recently had one of my 700 long actions pinned and had it set up as a switch barrel...7mm RM and 300 WM. I love shooting the 7mm all day long but the 300 WM is not the caliber to take for a high round count all day class.

In my experience, the differences become more apparent after 1200 yds. Granted this is all observation and not scientific fact.

The 7mm RM loves Berger 168 VLD with a BC of 0.604. The 300 WM loves 208 Amax with a BC of 0.648.

The barrels are the same contour (med palma), length (26") and threaded for 30P-1 can.

So my observations .... they are similar out to 1200yds. 300 WM is more expensive due to component cost. 300 WM components are hard to find right now (brass is scarce, 208 Amax is scarce, Retumbo & H1000 are rare). 7mm RM components are easier to find as not as many are using them.

If I can offer any further info not covered send me a PM.

If you like to tinker go 7/300 WSM with pointed 180 Hybrids.
Mine shot stupid accurate at 1200 yards. It was built by Jered at APA. H1000 or 4831SC work great. I turned my neck to help obtain maximum accuracy.

For something easy to load for go 300 Win mag

Ballistically don't let people fool you. A pointed 180 hybrid at 2940 or so is a wicked bullet in the wind

I have both.

My 7/300WSM launched the 180 Berger Hybrid at 3085fps over 73.5gr Retumbo in a long action loading.

The 300WM puts the 208 Amax downrange at 3000fps over 79gr of H1000

With the Berger 215 adn 230's in the 300WM the performance in the wind goes to the 300WM again because of the disparity between the 180 Berger 7mm BC and the 230gr Berger OTM

If you take the 190 Matrix and 189 Cuaterrucio in 7mm, tip them up and shoot them from a 7/300WSM the performance is a push between the two.

All things equal, 7mm seems to be about the ballistic optimum in a short action:

The heavy 30cal bullets have a better BC, but you can't push them as fast so they have more drift until you get well past 1000 yards. At really long range then BC is almost all that counts. If you take the graph I made (see link above) out to 2000 then the 510 WSM wins just by virtue of BC. If you're talking long action then the 338's are hard to beat because they can push the heavier bullets faster. Besides, you said recoil was not a concern... :)
