Ok, I know capitalism rules and blah blah blah, but when retailers are putting new bottles of Pappy out for 1300 and people are trying to get 2k for a bottle of 23 year on craigslist something is wrong, and I like to think Pappy should maybe step up and increase output to help combat the "bourbon investors" and help its true customers be able to get their product without spending almost a months salary to get it. It pisses me off, they have a good product that I very much enjoy but no way in hell will i spend that kinda money. Last year the hurricane supposedly wiped my area's allocation and this year it was an "inside job" and now supply is extremely limited. hell 2 years ago bottles of 20 and 23 sat for a couple months before now i can't even find 10 year rip van winkle. C'mon Pappy do the right thing.
    enough of my rant

I concur. The last bottle of Pappy I owned was 15 year and cost $69. Last bottle I helped drink was last January and we paid $30 a glass for same vintage.
I can find a lot of other bourbon that I like out there and won't even look for/at Pappy anymore.

Yeah, about that… Over 65 cases were recently stolen, so Buffalo Trace took it on the chin this year. I wouldn't expect prices to equalize any time soon, but it's not the fault of the distiller.

Bardstown principal cleared in Pappy Van Winkle investigation | Public Safety | Kentucky.com

Frankfort's Buffalo Trace Distillery, which makes Pappy Van Winkle, reported Oct. 15 that 195 bottles of the 20-year-old bourbon had disappeared from the distillery. Nine cases of Pappy Van Winkle rye also were stolen. The total value was estimated at more than $26,000.

I know a guy that knows a guy that is selling Pappy at a too good to be true price..."but it comes in a decanter".

    Read into that what ya'll will...and no, I didn't buy any :D

No liquor is worth $1200 a bottle. I REALLY like Don Julio 1942 but even at $110 a bottle that is a lot of money!

Supposedly Willet is very pappy like. I have yet to try it. I agree that Buffalo Trace is very good as well. My short list is Bullit bourbon and the rye, Buffalo Trace, Highland park 15, 18 , 21 scotch. Oh you can't forget Old Grand-dad. Me and my father -in- law love the stuff.

    Willett is great stuff.

Wouldn't it take 20 years before the "increase" in production hit the market?

This Pappy bourbon craze is friggin' ridiculous. Almost as bad as guys paying hundreds for a brick of .22rimfire.

I used to work at a high end joint where we had no less than 28 bourbons behind the bar, four of which were Van Winkles. Old Rip, Family Reserve Rye, and Pappy Family 15 & 20 yr Reserve. Drank them all the time, we did blind tastings & quizzed each other on them. We were trained to know each bourbon by color, palate & nose, as it was our job to have that knowledge to recommend them to clients. Fun job!

Anyhoo, armed with that knowledge, I can say there are more than a few of wonderful bourbons out there that can hang with the over hyped "Pappys". And I'd wager that the majority of idiots fueling the hype wouldn't know one "Pappy" from another, let alone any of the resaonbly priced excellent bourbons on the shelf. Weller Centennial, Bulleit, and yes, Old Grand Dad 100 are ass kickin' good & reasonably priced American whiskys that I keep in my bar at home.

News flash: if you buy into this craze and have to drink "Pappy" to feel noteworthy, you're prolly on the verge of becoming a self absorbed douche.
Check yo'self, fools! It's only friggin' bourbon...

I agree. Little collection of my Ol Man's. Was hoping to pick up a couple more for my own stash, but not at todays prices. He picked up a couple recently from small town stores....top shelf that hadn't sold for some time. He snatched them up at a steel.

my son gave me a bottle of this a couple years ago that I never opened, with this big shortage what is it worth

    Depend on year.....
how can you tell what year it is

edit: looked it up and found the bottle date - 2009 so it is from the old production

put it in the trade section for brass, so it potentially would only cost shipping
