.284 Win Ammo

I'll see if he has a picture of it. It is a pretty stout little round and fun to shoot, what little bit I did get to shoot with it.

He was telling me that he is on a waiting list or two for when it is available at several stores he found online. I just figured I'd try to ask around on here for him.

As long as it is a more modern (last 50 years) lever action that feeds from a Mag like the Savage 99 or Winchester 88, then just about any commercially available .284Win ammo will be fine in the rifle, save some of the heavy-dutiest of loads, provided you can FIND ANY!

A buddy of mine has a gorgeous Winchester 88 in .284Win and this is the cartridge that finally drove him to reload due to an almost complete lack of production/inventory online or otherwise for commercially mfg'd ammo. Winchester seems to do seasonal runs of it, but generally with garbage bullets like the 150gr PP. Similarly, CorBon offers .284Win ammo in a 140gr load, but again...it is prohibitively expensive at $2/round or $80/box. Might be worth a call or e-mail to them to see what is available at this time as I don't believe that is one that they keep in the pipeline all the time.

My LGS has a box of Winchester Super X 284 ammo. 150gr PowerPoint, I believe.

Been sitting there ~2 years, IIRC.

$45 or close to it.

I'll buy/ship if you want it.

My father in law is looking for .284 however I cannot find it.
Not knowing much about this, will 6.5x284 Norma round match the super x 284?

What do you mean?

Are you asking if you can fire 6.5-284 ammunition through a rifle chambered in 284?

The answer is yes and no.

Yes, you can fire them. The 6.5-284 ammo will chamber.

No, it won't work well. The 6.5-284 fires a 6.5mm (.264") diameter bullet, while the 284 fires a 7mm (.284") diameter bullet. While doing this wouldn't blow the gun up, you'd be lucky if it were accurate enough to hit a barn door at 100 yards.

That perfectly answered my question. Thank you! I'm sure he wants them for hunting so that option is out. I found some .284 on an ammunition auction site. Fingers crossed that I win the bid. My father-in-law has been looking for years and would love to hunt with his older rifle for nostalgic reasons. I would love to help make that happen.

I have a model 100 Winchester .284, shoots great but the one thing you need to know about them is that they were recalled with issues on the firing pin, where it would break and send the gun into fully automatic and could potentially cause life threatening injury, Winchester is still honoring this recall and once you have it resolved the only issue is finding the ammo. Best of luck!!

Hi, I have over 1200 rounds of Winchester factory ammunition, 20 rounds a box. I also have a 1970 Winchester model 100 with 3 clips. They were left to me when my father passed, and I'm looking to sell them. The gun would have to be sold through a FFL dealer. my email is [email protected]
