Let me start by saying, I am working on a 'budget precision' set-up. My ranges are 100-150 yards at home, 200 at the local range, and if I compete, I would have access to 600 yards an hour and a half away. I'm building from a Remington SPS-T base, dressed in a HS take-off stock, and will mount an SWFA 10X scope...

What I want and what is available gets a little confusing; I'm pretty sure I won't need a 20moa base anytime soon... So staying with a budget theme, but not wanting to skimp on a sight base, what should I be looking for? I have a base in mind; there are no extensions; the slots run full side to side; and I would really like to have the Leupold Mark 4 look with the side cut out like this PRI base:

What I envision, may not be what is best... would someone care to answer this tired old question again? I may opt for the 20MOA, unless the SWFA SS 10X scope won't let me shoot off of it on a 100-yard range... I'm getting a little paralysed with all of the options out there.

So let's establish a budget for the base; no more than $100 and that is currently pushing it.

Get a 20 MOA then when you come to extending your range you won't need to upgrade again. I think the EGW rails are great, I run a HD one on a .338 and its as solid as any of the others I have. Won't cost a fortune either.

For a $100. budget I would just buy a Seekins Precision Base, here: Picatinny Scope Bases

0 MOA, 20 MOA, or 30 MOA, with #6 screws are all the same price. For the SWFA 10x42MM you could run a 30 MOA base, as those scopes have well over 125 MOA of adjustment.

I have been running a weaver 0 moa rail on my savage. It has served me well for the $25 that I spent. My rifle is not a safe queen but I don't go out of my way to beat on it either. I have not tried one but the DNZ tactical mounts are a one piece (rings and base) and can be had in 20 moa and 0 moa versions. They are in the $80 to $100 range but that $100 covers your rings and base.

I had an SS 16X and it had 120+ moa of total adjustment and I imagine the 10X is the same so you should be able to get a 100 yard zero with a 20 moa base (unless something is wrong with your rifle).

Good point... and I just sold my unused EGW 20 MOA, as I felt it would not suit my needs... ah well.

I dot realize that the SS 10X had that kind of range... I really need to do better research. I will seek out a 20 MOA agin.

I was going to get a Weaver, but I cannot seem to find a Weaver that is not extended. Price is definitely comfortable... did you have to bed your base prior to complete install? I watched the 8541 Tactical video series on a Budget Precision build, and the first episode dealt with bedding a Weaver scope base due to a minor air gap...

I found another base from Yankee Himm Machine (YHM) that looks good, but it is 0 MOA: Remington 700 Short Action Scope Rail (Total Length: 5.7) [YHM-228-A] - $66.50 : YHM, Yankee Hill Machine Co., Inc. | Makers of High Quality Firearms, Accessories & Sound Suppressors, Makers of High Quality Firearms, Accessories & Sound Suppressors

it does not have the side cut out, but is without extensions. I'll enquire to see if they have a 20 MOA available, as I did not see it listed on their site.

I did bed the rear of the base. It was not hard and I am not sure if it needed to be bedded due to the rail not fitting properly or the action being slightly off. Either way the rail has held up and the rifle shoots well.

You can still get a 20MOA base now so you don't have to buy two bases later if you decide you need one, there are plenty of them for fairly cheap.

Thanks Artifact... looks like I am narrowing down to the EGW HD or a Talley base. These are very closely priced... they still have the extensions that I would prefer not to have, but not nearly as pronounced as some bases.

If you don't like the rail extending beyond the front of the receiver, five minutes and a hacksaw will fix the problem. I've had to do this on occasion with certain combinations of short scopes and low rings, as the rail interferes with the objective bell.

I considered that as an option should I go with the Weaver that has the recoil lug...

I've had to as well. Hacksaw and a file and it looks like it was milled off.
