Quick question. I have a factory Rem 700 243 9.125 twist and I want a load that can shoot 1000yds. I am trying to decide between the 95 VLD and the Hornady 105 BTHP. I know I can shoot the 95gr and it be stable but I'm not sure about the 105 yet. I haven't shot the 105 at distance yet. My main question is how much difference will I see at longer distances between these two bullets. Also, how effective is the 95gr at longer ranges. I'll be shooting steel and prairie dogs.

Thanks

I shot both in my 700 6mmREM, same specs as you have, only shot the 105 Hornadys out to 600, 95s out to 200, both are accurate bullets once you find the right load, you'll have to see which one your rifle likes best.

Was the 105 stable?

Indeed it was, got a 3 groups that put 4 shots out of 5 at or under an inch at 300yds. Never shot the 105s at 600yds with my 6mmREM, just with my 6 Creed, best I got was 3.5". Will be shooting 105VLDs next year at that range, 6mmREM is getting a new 6 Creed barrel. I did shoot some 105AMAXs from that 6mmREM at 600, 5.3", not bad for first time out.

I shoot the 95vld out of my 6mmBR, 8 twist, it's very accurate out to 1100, tried 1200 one day, just too windy. The wind plays hard on my cartridge, so I might not be of much help. I do remember finding a load was easy, real easy, compared to the 88gr Flat base Berger.
I have a little 7 year old buddy, that just kicks ass with this gun on steel to 600, fun to watch, usually give him a 6.5x47 to go farther. I see no reason your barrel wont handle them.

Great to know they are effective out to that distance. Not I have to decide if I should even try load development on the 105 HPBT from hornady.

You never did mention what cartridge you shoot. I can say this, velocity plays a big factor in the equation along with twist.

Wow I sure left that out. I fixed it above but I am shooting 243. I hope to run the 95s at 3000 and 2900 for the 105.

Poke, If you have a factory Remington chamber you'll likely not have much of that 95VLD in the case if you wanna reach the lands, when I shot them in my 6mmREM there was about .015" of the bearing surface in the case, in other words, they were just barely hanging on, at least with the Hornadys you'll have a bit more bearing surface inside your cases.

I agree. The load testing I have done was with the oal of about 2.81" bc of the internal box mag. That will be gone soon when I replace it with a detachable mag set up. I would love to use the hornady but I am at odds with trying to figure out if they will work for me and if I should even try them. I have had great results with the 105 at 100yds so far with great groups and no sign of bullet yaw. The question for myself is if I should see if they work out to the distance I need or just go with the 95gr and be done with it.

They work pretty well in my 6 Creed(at times under .25moa at 300yds) but that has a 8 twist, if you're getting them to shoot good at 100 it should be good out to whatever yur going to be shooting at.
